FUNCTIONS OF ASIAN ART 
•Asian art primarily serves religious 
function. Asians decorate their temples 
with the best vessels made of bronze. They 
make the statues of Gods and Goddesses 
in gold 
•Aside from its religious function, Asian 
art serves, practical, and aesthetic 
purpose.
RELIGIOUS FUNCTION 
•Asian art is essentially religious in 
nature. The arts have their sole theme 
focused on the life of the Gods and the 
mythical begins. Asians reflect their 
religious knowledge, beliefs, and 
experiences in their artworks.
CAMBODIA’S ANGKOR WAT 
Angkor Wat is a temple complex built in the 12th 
and 13th centuries, dedicated to the God Vishnu 
the Preserver.
PRACTICAL FUNCTION 
•For 1500 years, bronze-casting was a major 
art form in China. They made vessels that 
served practical functions. They had Ting, a 
wide, shallow bowl on three legs; the p’an, a 
wide flat dish; and Kuang for mixing wine. 
Kitchenware is always decorated with 
animals, leaves and even landscape.

KUANG – Is for mixing wine.
•The best feature of Indonesian art is the 
technique of making beautiful textiles, 
especially BATIK. Considered a fine art 
in Java, Batik-making dates back to the 
17th century.
EXAMPLES OF BATIK 
BATIK – Is a fine art in Java, 
Indonesia.
AESTHETIC FUNCTION 
•Asian landscape paintings are made on 
rice paper. During ceremonial tea parties, 
the family members sit in a room 
surrounded by paintings unrolled and 
hung on the walls, as if they sipping tea 
amidst the grandeur of nature. After the 
tea party, the paintings are rolled and 
stored in rosewood cabinet.
AESTHETIC FUNCTION 
•Printmaking is an old Chinese art has 
been in practice since the Chinese 
discovered the process of paper making 
in 200 B.C.E. This technology was 
transferred to Japan and later on, to 
other countries in the west.
AESTHETIC FUNCTION 
•In Japan, Hokusai (1760-1849) was the best 
known Japanese woodblock print maker under 
the Tokugawa regime. His woodblock print, 
THE GREAT WAVE OFF KANAGAWA, 
became the best known print outside Japan.
