The Department of Personnel Administration has developed a furlough plan at the direction of Governor Schwarzenegger to reduce state spending and ensure essential services are maintained. Under the plan, all general government operations will close on the first and third Fridays of each month beginning in February. Agency heads may request approval for certain positions to use a self-directed furlough where employees choose their furlough days or accrue days to take later. Salaries will be reduced to reflect unpaid furlough days but benefits will remain unchanged.
