INTERNET
● August 1995 saw a revolutionary change in the way in which Indian
businessmen could communicate with the rest of the world.
● In 1995 the VSNL launched the Gateway Internet Access Services on a
commercial basis from seven major cities and today it has become a
necessity for progressive Indian businessmen.
Netiquette
(network etiquette) is all about minding your manners on line. Some tips
for better netiquette-
● (a) do not use capital letters — they shout,
● (b) remember you are not talking to a machine, but another
person,
● (c) use short sentences, short paragraphs and correct grammar
● (d) make sure everything is right before you hit "send".
Advantages of Using the Internet
1. If connected to the Internet your PC can provide you with information on a small screen which would
otherwise be available only in the volumes of a library.
2. Text, graphics, pictures, video and audio are all there on the Internet.
3. A telephone line, a modem and a computer is all you need to connect to another computer within the
country or abroad.
4. Costs much less time and money for sending messages (e-mail). Replies too can be obtained
immediately. You can chat on the Internet.
5. Information, knowledge and news can be shared worldwide.
6. Governments find it difficult to ban or prohibit this free-way.
7. Telemarketing, or promotion of products, is possible without using salesmen or letters.
Disadvantages of Using the Internet
1. It takes a long time, sometimes, to log in or get connected. Also disconnections, while the Internet is on, are
frequent.
2. It takes a long time to change from one web-site to another.
3. Hackers frequently break into Internet connections and obtain information which is supposed to be secret or
confidential.
4. It takes a lot of training and practice to be able to access the Internet without wasting time or money in
making wrong contacts.
5. Surfing the net could become addictive.
6. Viruses could infect the Internet.
7. Children, if unsupervised, could watch pornography.
8. Copyrights are frequently infringed and plagiarism takes place.
MOODLE
Moodle stands for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment. It is an
open source Learning Management System (LMS) which is enormously versatile. People
like the various innovative tools that interface with the Moodle platforms enabling the
creation and distribution of teaching materials. This way they can communicate easily,
work as a community with common interests and foster collaboration in the pursuit of
knowledge sharing and rapid development. As Moodle is available in many languages, it
has widened the reach of LMS to educators everywhere. Though Moodle gained huge
success in the field of education, it is doing even more spectacular in business market.
Following are its advantages of Moodle
On-boarding Moodle has streamlined the on-boarding process both for
administrators and new hires. HR managers can now provide on-boarding via course
modules in Moodle. It tabulates and analyzes quiz results automatically. Additionally,
varying courses can be cloned so that modifications can be made for different
departments.
Compliance and Competency based Training Compliance Trainers and
training managers appreciate Moodle’s online training capabilities. They can easily
prove compliance training and determine the learner’s level of understanding of said
competency.
Workplace Safety Training Similar to compliance training, Workplace Safety
Training in Moodle allows you to know who has completed mandatory training and
who has not. With the capability to add video, discussion questions, quizzes and
external resources to your online Moodle courses, Safety and Hazard Training can
be completed at a time and location convenient for the learner.
The Hiring and Interview Process Moodle can be used for hiring and interview
process as well. Candidates can be asked to create a Moodle account to upload
their resumes and complete competency assessments. Hiring decision makers
could then easily access candidates’ profiles to review applications.
Product and Service Launches In today’s business world, products and services are being
updated, modified or changed at an ever increasing rate; so it is important to understand that
product knowledge training is not a one-time event. Rather, product knowledge is an ongoing
education initiative that changes as new clients emerge and new features develop. Moodle
makes it easy for an organization to train its people across all departments.
Communities of Expertise (COE) and Communities of Practice (COP) COE’s and
COP’s are informal groups of people within the business community that have common goals,
and interests, and who work together to teach and learn from one another. Moodle is very
helpful to them in connecting with experts on certain subject matter. They can ask questions or
search discussion forums to seek the knowledge they are looking for.
Continued Education Many organizations use Moodle to provide
their people with continued education opportunities to help them
further their careers.
Client, Channel and Partner Training One of the great things
about Moodle is that it is easy for users to create their own accounts to
access the course(s) an organization wants to make available to them.
This makes it easy to train clients, channel partners and business
partners at a low cost.
DISADVANTAGES OF MOODLE
● It is a technological tool which can be challenge for some people. If someone
has a hard time with technology, Moodle may be a problem for them.
● If a person does not have access to the Internet or some form of technology to
utilize Moodle, then this becomes a disadvantage for him and also for the
instructor.
● Some people, more specifically adult learners, are resistant and hesitant to
using any form of technology for learning. Even though Moodle allows for a
great place to organize and store learning content, they are very resistant to
utilize technology for learning and they will not use it. If Moodle is used for
online and distance learning, these people are not be keen on taking the
course unless it is required. Such people prefer a face-to-face interaction and
instruction which Moodle does not provide.
