Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an X-linked enzymopathy that leads to normocytic hemolytic anemia and is prevalent among Emirati males (15%) and females (5%). The Mediterranean variant, common in the Gulf region, can cause symptoms like prolonged neonatal jaundice and hemolysis from oxidants such as fava beans. Diagnosis is made through measuring G6PD activity, but care must be taken during hemolysis when false negatives may occur.
