This is one of my favorites. The badges you create
look so cool! Even if you don’t try to do so. Just make
one and download.

It is actually a shop. They sell real badges to wear.
But there is an option on the right of the site; it says
make your own. Click there and create your badge
and when finished, click on preview and print screen
or right click and save your image.

You can use Canva for everything! I use this for lots
of stuff. Easy to use and it lets you to save time for
sure. But if you want to create badges it is not that
easy as you have to find every part of a badge
yourself and choose the colors, design etc.

Here again the badges look so cool. And anyone can
create a badge as it is so easy. You can use the
templates. You cannot save them; but you can send
them to your friends. Strange. What I do is, right
click and paste it on Paint.

You can create Lego characters with no signing up

should take a screen shot and paste it on Paint or

download your avatar you should register with your

with less options. You need to upgrade your account

Quest 1: The Yeti and the GIF-10 points
Sound interesting? It is. In this challenge, you'll be
programming and Yeti to dance and creating your own
animated GIF (a very short movie)
To complete this quest, you need to:
•Change the variables (the fur and skin color and the hand
and foot size)
•Program the Yeti to walk on stage, do at least 5 movements,
and exit the stage
•Create four frames in the GIF with at least one animated
"Doodle"
Quest 2: Flappy and the Others- 35 points
•You'll be logging into your code.org account for this
challenge.
•Scroll down to Level 16: Flappy Bird. Go through all 10
levels to create your own Flappy Bird Game.
•Then, move on to Level 17: Design Lap. By completing all 10
levels, you'll learn how to create your own animated, coded
story.
Quest 3: Scratching The Surface-50 points
This is the quest for those gamers who REALLY want a
challenge. You'll be creating an account in a program called
Scratch, which is very much like what we learned in the
code.org lessons. With Scratch, there is so much you can
do...create your own game, an animated story--the
possibilities are pretty amazing.
• Log in to Scratch with this link. Come up with a team name
and a password you will both remember.
•Explore the various coding blocks--pay special attention to
the "events" blocks. You may also want to explore the
tutorials.
•When you're ready, create a game or story that has:
• At least 2 Sprites (characters) that EACH do eat least
5 things
• At least 1 background

Gamification in the Elementary Classroom |Extra Resources
Here are some of the elements I used to gamify my teaching
and motivate my students:
New system.
Instead of grades (max 100%), students got eXperience
Points (XP). When a student gets a grade of 60%, he/she
feels disappointed because it shows them that they didn’t
make it to the top. In games, however, the player gain points
according to his/her performance and
achievements. Therefore, the only way is up. Instead of
grades, they get points: 500XP for doing homework, up to
1000XP for a quiz, 300XP for participation in the class, etc.
To the “grades” off their minds, each unit of the science
subject is called level. In each level, a student needs to gain
at least 11.000XP to continue to the next level, and up to
20.000XP to get the top score. As you can see, I chose big
numbers to get as far as I can from the notorious 100 score.
To make things even more interesting: If a student gains
more than 20.000XP, he/she can use these points in the next
level. This gives him/her a better starting point over the
others, hence competition + rewards =
motivation. Students can only gain points; not lose them,
as done in games. This way, students count up from zero,
which is motivating, rather than lose points from 100%,
which is demotivating if the student doesn't get the full
100% mark. Any effort from the student can be rewarded by
points: The more they try, the more the score increases.
Almost the definition of motivation, isn’t it? At the end of the
day, the score translates back to a grade (up to 100%). After
all, we still need to report according to the education system
rules… let's be realistic, shall we? However, as the year goes
by, the students don’t feel like being graded; they enjoy the
game-like atmosphere, the competition, and their high
scores.
Competition.
To enhance competition I presented the scores as a visual
leaderboard style as shown below. As you can see, three
students got more than the maximum of 20.000 XP and the
extra points will be their “bonus” points at the next level.

  • 21. How to Design a Gamified Course | © 2017 Yasemin Islah 18 Gamification in the Elementary Classroom |Extra Resources Quest 1: The Yeti and the GIF-10 points Sound interesting? It is. In this challenge, you'll be programming and Yeti to dance and creating your own animated GIF (a very short movie) To complete this quest, you need to: •Change the variables (the fur and skin color and the hand and foot size) •Program the Yeti to walk on stage, do at least 5 movements, and exit the stage •Create four frames in the GIF with at least one animated "Doodle" •Click here for the Yeti •Click here for the GIF Quest 2: Flappy and the Others- 35 points •You'll be logging into your code.org account for this challenge. •Scroll down to Level 16: Flappy Bird. Go through all 10 levels to create your own Flappy Bird Game. •Then, move on to Level 17: Design Lap. By completing all 10 levels, you'll learn how to create your own animated, coded story. Quest 3: Scratching The Surface-50 points This is the quest for those gamers who REALLY want a challenge. You'll be creating an account in a program called Scratch, which is very much like what we learned in the code.org lessons. With Scratch, there is so much you can do...create your own game, an animated story--the possibilities are pretty amazing. • Log in to Scratch with this link. Come up with a team name and a password you will both remember. •Explore the various coding blocks--pay special attention to the "events" blocks. You may also want to explore the tutorials. •When you're ready, create a game or story that has: • At least 2 Sprites (characters) that EACH do eat least 5 things • At least 1 background

  • 24. How to Design a Gamified Course | © 2017 Yasemin Islah 21 Gamification in the Elementary Classroom |Extra Resources Here are some of the elements I used to gamify my teaching and motivate my students: New system. Instead of grades (max 100%), students got eXperience Points (XP). When a student gets a grade of 60%, he/she feels disappointed because it shows them that they didn’t make it to the top. In games, however, the player gain points according to his/her performance and achievements. Therefore, the only way is up. Instead of grades, they get points: 500XP for doing homework, up to 1000XP for a quiz, 300XP for participation in the class, etc. To the “grades” off their minds, each unit of the science subject is called level. In each level, a student needs to gain at least 11.000XP to continue to the next level, and up to 20.000XP to get the top score. As you can see, I chose big numbers to get as far as I can from the notorious 100 score. To make things even more interesting: If a student gains more than 20.000XP, he/she can use these points in the next level. This gives him/her a better starting point over the others, hence competition + rewards = motivation. Students can only gain points; not lose them, as done in games. This way, students count up from zero, which is motivating, rather than lose points from 100%, which is demotivating if the student doesn't get the full 100% mark. Any effort from the student can be rewarded by points: The more they try, the more the score increases. Almost the definition of motivation, isn’t it? At the end of the day, the score translates back to a grade (up to 100%). After all, we still need to report according to the education system rules… let's be realistic, shall we? However, as the year goes by, the students don’t feel like being graded; they enjoy the game-like atmosphere, the competition, and their high scores. Competition. To enhance competition I presented the scores as a visual leaderboard style as shown below. As you can see, three students got more than the maximum of 20.000 XP and the extra points will be their “bonus” points at the next level.
