Girls are losing interest in STEM fields during middle school, despite being equally capable as boys. This impacts society and families by reducing the potential STEM workforce, which is currently only 19% women. The GEMS Day event aims to address this by hosting hands-on STEM workshops for 48 middle school girls led by college professors. The initial kickoff GEMS Day is scheduled for April 4, 2009 with three 2-hour sessions and lunch in between the first and second sessions.
