HOW MY MOM INFLUENCED ME
1966
My mom was born in East Orange, New Jersey in 1966.
Growing up in the sixties and seventies, she always wore
an interesting mix of materials and colors.
(Q) Did you go shopping for most of your clothes
growing up?
(A) No, my clothes were often given to me by another
girl in the church who was a couple of years older than
me.
(Q) So your clothes were always slightly worn and a
couple years out of style? (A) Yes
(Q) What kind of hair style did you have?
(A) My dad would cut my hair, and because I did not like
the way he cut it, I would wear it in two pigtails or a
ponytail.
(Q) Did you fall for the fads of the day such as
bellbottoms or tie dye?
(A) No, I usually wore a t-shirt with a pair of jeans or
shorts.
(Q) Did you often wear the hideous color combinations
we often associate in this era? (A) Of coarse!
(Q) Wow, what a cute picture!
(A) One year for school pictures I was sick, so my eyes
were pink, the back round was pink, and the dress that I
was wearing was pink. Everything was pink!
1992
• I was born during a cold night on
December 13, 1992 in
Livingston, New Jersey. It is
fitting that I am holding a
football in my baby picture,
because as I was being born my
dad was busy watching Sunday
Night Football.
The Golden Years
Parents are the biggest influencers of a child’s
development, and our development and what
we wear go hand-in-hand. Growing up as child
our family did not have a lot of money. So, like
my mom before me, most of my clothes were
given to me by boys who were a couple of
years older than me. Since my parents were
very much into sports, it made sense that most
of the clothes I received were athletic in
nature. (I still have a sweet pair of size 1
original Air Jordan’s I was given). My mom
would get the clothes from the moms of my
friends, and new clothes would periodically
appear in my drawer. I loved it, but sometimes
I got a pair of jeans from my friends, and I
quickly figured out that I could not play sports
that well in them. So in 4th grade I wore jeans
for the last time, and I have not put on a pair
since.
The Golden Years
Continued
Most parents try to regulate their kids dress in
some form. In a way my parents did, because
they sent me to private school, and there, I
was forced to wear a uniform. When I was not
wearing a school uniform, I was wearing the
uniform of whatever sport I was playing at the
time. Clothing is one biggest things that teens
use to identify themselves and since I was an
athlete, I mostly wore athletic wear. As you can
see I also have no hair in this picture. With the
exception of when I was really little, I have had
some variation of a shaved head. My mom
would not want to spend money taking me to
a barber so she would take a razor and buzz my
head.
Today
• Today, you can still see me
wearing a pair of shorts and a t-
shirt with my favorite teams logo
on it. However, any clothes I
wear have to be brand new.
Even though it was fine when I
was young, I guess hand-me-
downs gave me an aversion to
used clothes.
