Geometric Isomers ( cis-trans )

By Mary Goode
What is the same and what is
different about these two
geometric isomers?
They have the same number of carbons and
hydrogen, but they are arranged differently.

One is called cis-2-butene and the other is called
trans-2-butene, why?

“CIS” means on the same side and “TRANS”
means across; therefore, they are called this
because of the way they are arranged.
Cis-2-butene
( on the same side )
Trans-2-butene
( across )
Geometric Isomerism is another form of
stereoisomerism. Geometric Isomers
exclude any different arrangements which
are due to the molecule rotating as a
whole, OR rotating about particular bonds.
In conclusion…
An isomer is a structure in which you have
the same amount of certain molecule, yet
they are arranged differently.

The most important thing that I learned is
the difference between “cis” and “trans”
