George Berkeley was an Irish philosopher born in 1685. He was educated at Kilkenny College and Trinity College Dublin, earning degrees. He published his major works, A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge and Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous, in his twenties. Berkeley was an Anglican Bishop of Cloyne and criticized philosophers like Descartes and Locke. He believed that objects only exist when they are being perceived and proposed the theory that "to be is to be perceived".
