on

of
the

and
their
interactions
has
been
specified.
As
well,
all
the
communication
categories
and
types
of
services
have
been
formally
specified.
All
the
procedures
are
IMS-‐compliant,
and
those
features
not
currently
supported
by
IMS
have
been
created
trying
to
keep
the
IMS
compliance
as
much
as
possible.
A
guide
about
how
an
emergency
organization
should
implement
the
support
of
the
GERYON-‐compliant
procedures
is
compiled
in
GERYON
Deliverable
D2.2.
Following
GERYON
approach,
the
management
of
users
and
their
identities
remains
at
organization
level.
Thus,
it
is
the
organization
operator
who
decides
which
local
users
and
which
kind
of
sensible
information
is
available
to
other
GERYON
partners.
The
GERYON
elements
have
been
designed
to
run
over
standardized
IMS
infrastructures.
They
can
be
integrated
into
native
IMS
core
infrastructures
without
modifications;
just
based
on
GERYON-‐specific
Service
Profiles
and
Trigger
Points.
The

- 2. 2 Interoperability and convergence enabler GERYON will enable not only the interoperability among current PMR systems but the convergence to 4G GERYON CONTEXT Nowadays there is a growing uncertainty about the near future evolution of classical PMR solutions due to spectrum scarcity, digital dividend issues and economic crisis. GERYON aims at facing this situation by seizing the existing window of opportunity due to the convergence of the IMS as a predominant enabler for future multimedia networks and the imminent deployment of commercial LTE networks. GERYON proposes an innovative emergency inter-‐ networking system capable of connecting existing first responder communication systems and enabling the integration of next generation mobile networks by defining technology independent standardized interfaces and autonomic configuration and adaptation techniques under the umbrella of IMS, 3GPP’s suite of standards. Therefore, GERYON will unify common technical and operational logic of first responder communications networks in a technology independent manner. This unification will offload interconnection gateways from duplicated technology dependent details by providing a neutral interconnection interface. Proposed system will ensure seamless operation regardless the access technology and take advantage of coverage and responsiveness of existing PMRs and broadband data services of 4G networks. GERYON will demonstrate both classical (i.e. PTT, MTP and preemptive calls) and enhanced emergency services (i.e. multimedia streaming and data services) over an across-‐frontier testbed. Furthermore, its capability for including general purpose IMS terminals and GERYON enhanced ones will allow an easy access to first responder networks to different groups of users that will take advantage of enhanced services such as the Red Button over general purpose devices.
- 3. 3 GERYON will demonstrate enhanced emergency services in a complex scenario including TETRA and GERYON-‐ enhanced LTE networks GERYON OBJECTIVES GERYON IMS PLATFORM GERYON aims at using standardized protocols to address interoperability problems. Therefore a fully operational IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-‐driven emergency services management platform will be designed, developed and demonstrated. GERYON ECOSYSTEM Innovative GERYON Enhanced Management System (GEMS) and related GERYON Media GateWay (GMGW) and GERYON Security GateWay (GSGW) nodes will reassure the compatibility between any two organizations at communication signalling level (e.g., naming scheme and call priority scheme) solving media codecs and media encryption incompatibility problems. GERYON BRAIN GEMS central call controller will include advanced decision support logic for technology agnostic management of emergency communications. GERYON GATEWAY GEGW will support the integration of TETRA users into the IMS-‐based GERYON framework. It will be integrated into the local organization’s PMR infrastructure in order to allow any non IMS-‐enabled organization to connect to GERYON. GERYON CLIENTS GERYON software clients will allow using a subset of GERYON services through non-‐GERYON access networks. Additionally, specific software will be created to support special emergency services in smartphones. GERYON 4G ENABLER A Technology-‐Dependant Emergency GERYON Services (TD-‐EGS) node will be integrated into the local organization’s infrastructure in order to provide the support for IMS-‐based GERYON-‐compliant procedures and, therefore, demonstrate enhanced emergency services support in 4G LTE network. GERYON DISSEMINATES GERYON targets the use and wide dissemination of knowledge, enabling the standardization and the commercial exploitation of the project outcomes. GERYON MANAGEMENT Proper management and coordination of project activities will enable the Consortium to achieve its goals and objectives on time and within budget. IMS GEMS

The definition of the different network elements and their interactions has been specified. As well, all the communication categories and types of services have been formally specified. All the procedures are IMS-‐compliant, and those features not currently supported by IMS have been created trying to keep the IMS compliance as much as possible. A guide about how an emergency organization should implement the support of the GERYON-‐compliant procedures is compiled in GERYON Deliverable D2.2. Following GERYON approach, the management of users and their identities remains at organization level. - 5. 5 GERYON ECOSYSTEM INFRASTRUCTURE DEPLOYMENT The required networks to support the GERYON scenario have been fully deployed and tested including a TETRA network in Bilbao, Spain, a LTE network in Athens, Greece and 4 virtualized IMS cores for different organizations. DEVELOPMENT The development phase of the different GERYON elements is in good progress, around the middle of the activity. Several functionalities are already available and initial functional tests have been performed. Although the integration phase has not started yet (Q1 2013), some interoperability tests have been already carried out successfully. GEMS management system Initial prototype is already available, responsible for providing advance Call Controlling capabilities including: Identity mapping functions between users of different organizations, so they can communicate with their GERYON-‐defined aliases. Media-‐level parameters (codec or media ciphering configurations) incompatibility detection GERYON CONTROL ROOM The Control Room element is able to subscribe and read the multi-‐organization GERYON groups and display the fleet information in a map. Then, different actions can be applied such as creating dynamic groups of users, making calls, call forwarding between users, etc. GEGW Both external and internal multi-‐technology design of a reference GEGW has been defined, including core modules and per technology parsers. An analysis and validation of TETRA infrastructure’s actual capabilities and comparison with GERYON demanded functionalities have been carried out. TETRA-‐GERYON GEGW has been designed and basic services (Individual Call, Short message, PTT, Location, Presence and Group Call) have been deployed. 4G Enhanced Services TD-‐EGS Initial LTE pilot and emulator have been deployed and tested. LTE TD-‐EGS prototype including call controlling, presence, location retrieving (SUPL & CELL ID based) and publishing capabilities developed and tested. GSGW and GMW The design of GERYON Security and Multimedia Gateways has been completed. Preliminary versions of GMGW and GSGW are available for performing transcoding and cross-‐ciphering functions. GERYON terminals Initial version of open source based GDROID client has been developed, including additional GERYON specific and generally unsupported IMS capabilities have been included. Different UI have been developed. CellID, battery and location feedbacking mechanisms have been designed and developed
- 6. 6 COST EFFECTIVENESS GERYON is especially suited to offer a cost-‐ effective solution due to three factors: SOFTWARE BASED The proposed platform mostly involves software modules, which are more affordable to reproduce and deploy. STANDARDISED Platform functions and communications are based on 3GPP open public standards. OVER THE TOP APPROACH (OTT) GERYON utilizes the deployed networks as they are. This facilitates the interoperability between networks and terminals of different vendors. INNOVATION TECHNOLOGY AGNOSTIC GERYON integrates heterogeneous networks under a common platform, using an all-‐IP approach for both data and control planes. COMPATIBILITY AND GOVERNANCE A third-‐party reliable organization mediates the emergency communications between different professional organizations. The GEMS controller in the GERYON domain performs all the necessary operations in order to reassure the compatibility. OPEN GERYON procedures are designed based on open standards, and specifically in IMS as the prevalent candidate for future 4G networks, providing a good basis for future Public Safety interoperability. SECURITY The protection of public safety communications is essential. Secure communications are needed to protect emergency personnel and to support mission accomplishment. Unsecured systems leave authorities vulnerable and increase the risks to citizens. Secure communications will be addressed by endowing the communications infrastructure with reliability, protection of confidentiality and integrity of information. If end users do not share common ciphering mechanisms, the ciphering/deciphering operations will be invoked by GEMS and carried out in the GSGW, ensuring interoperability.
