10 Things That Will Get You Fired From A Job Smithtown High School – Career Center Mrs. Mary Pat Grafstein Work Experience Coordinator
Knowing your employers expectations will enhance your work performance. However, doing things that are NOT APPROPRIATE may result in you being fired from your job.
Dressing Inappropriately…. will get you fired. “You never get a second chance to make a good impression.” is never more important than when you begin a new job. The initial impression you make when you begin your new job will stay with you as long as you are employed with that organization.
Businesses are more conservative…so… Cover all those tattoos… Take out all those piercings….
Lying (Perjury) on Application or Resume… will get you fired. People will check your information.
Sexual Harassment On the Job… will get you fired. Any sexually oriented behavior, such as teasing or touching, that is unwelcome by the recipient and creates a hostile work environment. Often the way you dress may be misinterpreted.
Evaluate the clothing you wear. No conversation that includes sexual connections Choose your “friends” carefully. Say “NO!” to any words or suggested actions. Don’t put yourself in a compromising situation. Don’t accept gifts or invitations from “other” employees that have no reason to reward you. Report remarks, acts or innuendos to your boss.
Theft of Materials… can get you fired. Don’t ever remove any material that is to be left at the job, and take it home. This is NOT borrowing. Employers now install cameras to keep a watchful eye on you!!! Ask to use the property. Take care of the property. Point out you RETURNED the property.
Theft of Services … can get you fired. While at work you should not take personal time out to conduct your own business. You are “stealing” time from your job. This costs the company money. Make personal calls when you are home. Cigarette breaks during your own free time. Take time off at your break time. The job needs to get done!!
Too Many Absences… can get you fired. Employees should take Sick Days when health related problems put them and others at risk. More than 5 sick days taken for one year will be considered poor attendance. Don’t ask for personal time off or ask to come in late.
Being Late Too Many Times… can get you fired. Get to work early. Don’ leave early. Don’t punch out another person’s time card. Lateness of five or more minutes may lead to a deduction in pay. Habitual lateness could be grounds for dismissal. Call your supervisor and let him/her know you will be late.
Inappropriate Behavior… can get you fired. Any time you conduct yourself in any way that is unacceptable in the workplace, could get you in trouble, demoted, or fired. Know what is appropriate and what is not. Drinking on the job, or coming back to work from lunch intoxicated would be grounds for dismissal. Rules as to where you may eat should be posted. Working around any expensive equipment or important documents is prohibited.
Inappropriate Language Is Inappropriate Also NO: Cursing Bad Language Dirty Jokes
Inability to Get Along With Coworkers … can get you fired. Not Working As Part of a Team Avoid Helping Coworkers Creating Conflicts on the Job Putting People Down Not Pulling Your Share of the Load Be Part of the Team Instead
Poor Work Performance… will get you fired. Not Completing Your Assignments on Time Making Excuses for Your Inabilities Blaming Others for Your Actions
Getting Fired Is NEVER A Good Thing… You may want to use your former employer as a reference on your next resume. Shows your lack of responsibility or work ethic. You’re Fired!
