Editor's Notes

  • #3: Session approx 1 hour- input & also activities
  • #4: If you are unsure about where to start your career planning, using a framework can help. This is one approach based on the DOTS model (Bill Law/ Tony Watts) but there are other approaches that you can take. Comprises 4 elements that you can use throughout your life. 1/ Self awareness/ reflection- helps you to understand yourself in career terms – 3 broad areas Interests- ideas and activities which interest you can influence your choice of job Skills- an ability to identify skills you develop and describe them is essential in demonstrating employability Values- what is important to you- think about your views of the world operates and how you wish to function in it All help you to define a criteria 2/ Opportunity awareness- research what is out there/ opportunities/ the labour market/ how to enter roles and what they involve/ location/ salary Make decisions based on your criteria 3/ Action Planning- Draw on the information about yourself/ research/ opportunity and make a plan! Ask yourself Where am I now, where do I want to be/ how do I get there/ do I need to develop experience/ do I need to develop my skills/ How? Make a plan! 4/ Developing experience- making applications/ writing a CV & covering letter/ approaching employers/ networking to gain experience
  • #5: Give group booklet and ask them to fill in initial exercise 10- 15 minutes
  • #7: When you have defined a criteria to begin with, what next? Use our subject guides to give you detailed information about the skills you will develop during your degree studies & also to generate ideas – Jobs that are directly related/ jobs for all graduates etc Use web resources- profiles on prospects, sector specific information DHLE stats- what did previous graduates in your area go on to do? Look at LMI information- do you want to stay in Brighton? Does your area of interest exist in the local area- find out what the labour market looks like- salaries etc
  • #8: Come to events that we run – talk to employers- find out how they got into what they are doing now- routes into professions etc networking, insider view of careers, mentoring etc etc
  • #9: Make a plan- think about what you need to do next- do you need further research into the labour market? What could you do to develop your experience?
  • #10: Gaining experience- to group initially- what could you do next? 5 mins- some ideas about the kinds of experience that could be useful to you. Go through possible sources of experience
  • #11: How we can help- resources – where to look for vacancies, contacts etc
  • #12: Taking action- what is helpful action that you can take now/ this week/ this month? What help will you need to do this? 5 mins
