Introduction
• For many years cables ruled the world.
• Optical fibers played a dominant role for its
higher bit rates and faster transmission.
• But the installation of cables caused a
greater difficulty and thus led to wireless
access.

Gi-Fi
 Gi-Fi stands for Gigabit Wireless.
 Worlds first transceiver integrated on a single chip.
 It operates at 60 GHz on the CMOS process.
 Allows wireless transfer of audio and video data at up
to 5 Gbps.
 Gi-Fi has ten times the current maximum wireless
transfer rate usually within a range of 10 meters.

Architecture of Gi-Fi
 The core component of a Gi-Fi system is
the subscriber station.
 It supports standard of IEEE 802.15.3C Wireless
PAN.
 An 802.15.3C based system often uses small
antenna at the subscriber station.
 It supports line of sight operation.
11
Architecture of Gi-Fi(cont.)
12
Fig. 5 Gi-Fi Architecture
Working of Gi-Fi
 Use Time Division Duplex for both transmission and receiving.
 Data files are up converted from IF range to RF60 Ghz range
by using 2 mixers.
• Fed this to a power amplifier, which feeds millimeter wave
antenna.
Fig. 6 Transmission (uplink)
13
Working of Gi-Fi (Cont.)
 The incoming RF signal is first down converted to an IF signal
centered at 5 GHz and then to normal data ranges.
Fig. 7 Reception (downlink)
14
Time-division Duplex
 Time-Division Duplex (TDD) is the application
of time-division multiplexing to separate
outward and return signals.
Fig. 8 Time-division Duplex
15
Working in 60 Ghz
 This frequency band is currently mostly unused.
 High oxygen absorption at 60GHZ (10-15 dB/Km).
 60GHz is an excellent choice for covert communications.
Fig.9 Oxygen Attenuation vs Frequency
16
Ultra Wide Band Frequency Usage
 Technology with high bit rate, high security and
faster data transmission.
 Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is a technology for
transmitting information spread over a large
bandwidth (>500 MHz) that should, be able to share
spectrum with other users.
17
Advantages of Gi-Fi
• High speed of data transfer
• Low power consumption
• High security
• Cost effective
• Small size
• Highly portable
18
Applications And Future Scope
 Household appliances

19
Applications And Future Scope(Con.)
 Office appliances

20
Applications And Future Scope(Con.)
 Broadcasting video signal transmission system in sports
stadium.
 Inter-vehicle communication
system.
 Internet access in Railway
coaches.
 Wireless PAN Network.
Fig. 12 Video Broadcast
21
Conclusion
 The Gi-Fi integrated transceiver chip will be launched by
starting of next year by NICTA, Australia.
 Due to less cost of chip so many companies like Intel, LG,
Matsushita (Panasonic), NEC, Samsung, Si-BEAM, Sony
and Toshiba etc. are looking forward to launch with lower
cost.
 Within five years, we expect GiFi to be the dominant
technology for wireless networking.
