GIS can be used by NGOs for conservation projects, community development, and infrastructure planning. Some examples described are using GIS to map bat populations threatened by white-nose syndrome, assess land prioritization for conservation, and create trail maps. GIS was also used to design a water system for villages in Laos and engage youth in neighborhood mapping to improve their community.

The new maps contain information on land plots, existing electric networks and provide vital information like street addresses, meter numbers, and where houses are connected to the electrical system.
