Project Based Learning with
Global Education Themes
Grace Liu, American English Fellow
WHY MOLDOVA?
DO YOU LIKE TO WORK HERE?
 Very happy to work in Moldova.
 Love Moldavian people: kind, friendly, caring, &
helpful. Enjoy the friendship.
 Feel very honored to have the opportunity to
work with English teachers here.
 Greatly respect teachers here: life long learning,
work under pressure (overworked & under
paid).
PURPOSE OF THIS PRESENTATION:
1. Recharging: learn to teach project based
learning
 An introduction of the new theory &
practice.
 Understand the reasons for these changes.
2. Make connections with some amazing
teachers. The best resources we have is we
have each other.
3. Be open to changes. Changes
take time, not over night.
OUTLINE:
Outline:
I. Why is global competency important?
II. Why is project based learning beneficial to students?
III. How to design global learning projects?
IV. Sample US education projects.
V. Questions & discussions
VI. Reflection & Summary
TEAM BUILDING &
GROUP ROLES FOR DOING A PROJECT:
1. Leader
Responsible
for keeping the
group on task.
Makes sure
that all members
of the group
have an
opportunity to
participate and
learn.
2. Recorder
Writes out
results of group
activities or
important
discussion
points.
Also prepares
presentation
materials for oral
reports.
3. Reporter
Gives oral
responses about
the group’s
activities or
discussions.
4. Timekeeper
Responsible
for keeping time
and making sure
that the group
finishes the task
on time.
I. Why is global competency important?
 Global competency for our students is
required for the 21st century citizens.
 As educators, how are we doing our job?
I. Global Competency:
“Schools and universities around the world are
not adequately preparing ordinary citizens to
understand the nature of global challenges,
such as terrorism, climate change, human-
environmental interactions, world trade,
demographic change, and global
conflict”.
BY FERNANDO REIMERS, Harvard International Review March 21,
2009
GLOBAL CHALLENGES:
 terrorism,
 climate change,
 human-environmental
interactions,
 world trade,
 demographic change,
and
 global conflict.
I. Global Competency:
Because of the growing
interdependence of nations,
resulting from trade, increased
frequency of communications, and
migratory flows, the ability to
understand these modern global
challenges is critical.
BY FERNANDO REIMERS, Harvard International Review March 21,
2009
I. GLOBAL COMPETENCY:
A globally competent person
will view cultural
differences as
opportunities for
 constructive,
 respectful, and
 Peaceful
transactions among
people.
BY FERNANDO REIMERS, Harvard
International Review March 21, 2009
GLOBAL EDUCATION CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
Attitude change towards
cultural & value
differences:
 Be interested
 Understand
 Tolerate
 Appreciate
II. WHY IS PROJECT BASED LEARNING
BENEFICIAL TO STUDENTS?
Definition: PBL is “an
instructional approach that
contextualizes learning by
presenting learners with
problems to solve or products to
develop”.
(Moss & Van Duzer, 1998, p. 2).
 What are the required skills for the 21st
century?
 What are the pedagogies to teach these
skills?
 How is a foreign language best learned?
FacebookTwitter
www.teachthought.com/the-future-of-learning/a-diagram-of-21st-century-
The easiest way for teachers to teach:
to lecture
What is the best way
for students to learn?
15
New approaches to facilitate students’
learning process
16
II. PROJECT BASED LEARNING:
Learning by doing
or teaching others
facilitates students
best in their
learning process.
 Language is not learned in isolation.
 from a teacher-centered top-down approach to
a student-centered bottom-up one.
 Major change: teacher's role in students’ learning process:
 from knowledge-transmission models to
Project or task-based, real life problem solving approach.
 Teachers’ role: work as a consultant,
guide, coach, and/or a facilitator.
By Chia Suan Chong: Ten innovations that have changed English language teaching
18
New approaches to facilitate students’
learning process:
QUESTIONS FOR TEACHERS:
 What do we need to do to make our
classroom student centered?
 How do we guide our students in learning?
 How do we encourage students to find out
what they do not know? Or what they should
learn?
 How do we keep our students challenged,
interested and supported at the same time?
19
Collaboration
PBL allows students to grow in the skills of:
1) Planning
2) Organizing
3) Negotiating (make a point and arrive at a consensus)
4) Assigning responsibility and following through
5) Problem-solving
6) Peer feedback
Where are these skills useful outside of class?
By Christine Esche from Project Based Learning Community of Practice webpage
BASIC PHASES/STEPS:
The basic phases found in most projects include:
1. Selecting a topic,
2. making plans,
3. researching,
4. developing products, and
5. sharing results with others.
(Wrigley, 1998).
III. HOW WE DID OUR PROJECTS?
 Decide a project/task (solve a problem or have a
product)
 Provide a list of requirements (due date, format of
presentation, paper, or a solution)
 Develop a driving question/questions-WH
 Divide team responsibilities& Monitor progress
 Give feedback & summarize/reflect
 Have a budget??? (banners, posters, & coffee
break)
HOW WE DID OUR PROJECTS:
Cultural Presentation Series:
 Use English
 Presenters are students or volunteers
 Choose a country or topic: Avoid politics &
religion
 Prepare a presentation with 6x6 rule – 90 min.
 A final research paper 5-7 pages
IV. SAMPLE PROJECTS:
IEW
Class projects
Study abroad
Club projects
Service
