Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production
Unit 64: Motion Graphics and Compositing Video
This is the sharpness and clarity of an image. The term resolution is usually used to describe
monitors, printers and bit-mapped graphic images. Bitmap images are made up of pixels and
image resolution is just simply the number of PPI pixels per inch in the bitmap grid.
There are two aspects two every bitmap image and they are its image which is the width and
height measure in inches and resolution the number of pixels is the number of pixels per inch.
These 2 factors alone determine the total number of pixels that are in the image.

Typical resolutions:
1 that is found on very cheap cameras is 256x256, the resolution is so low that the
picture quality is usually unacceptable and this is 65,000 total pixels.
Then there is 640x480 which is the low end on most ‘real’ cameras. This resolution is
ideal for e-mailing pictures or posting them on websites.
1216x912 is a megapixel image size – 1,109,000 total pixels and this is a good resolution
for printing pictures.
1600x1200 as this has almost 2 million total pixels, this is ‘high resolution’ You can print
a 4x5 inch print taken at this resolution with the same quality that you would get from a
photo lab.
High end consumer cameras can capture over 12 million pixels. Some professional
cameras support over 16 million pixels or 20 million pixels for large-format cameras.

The more pixels that are in an image, the more detail that will be displayed in that
image., there for the fewer pixels that are in an image then the less detail that will be in the
image. There are 2 ways to display an image, on screen and in print.
When you are preparing image sit is important that you know what resolution you need to
scan or size the pictures to.
The standard resolution for print is 300 PPI
The standard resolution for screen displays is 72 ppi
Picture quality also depends on how big the sensor
is
The larger the pixel size, the
more light can fall in the sensor
making the light measurement
more accurate and less
diffraction which is important as
it causes blur.
