- 2. Lyrics and visuals In the video ‘Wrecking ball’ by Miley Cyrus the lyrics are fitting the visuals throughout the song. For example in both of these pictures it is showing a ‘wrecking ball’ with either Miley on or just on its own breaking a wall. At that moment the lyrics are ‘I came in like a wrecking ball’ When the lyric is actually being sang either Miley and the ball or just the wrecking ball is going through the wall, this representing her breaking free and shocking people. Also it could possibly be showing that she is reborn and has changed.
- 3. Links between music and visuals In the music in ‘skinny genes’ By Eliza Doolittle there are lots of instruments used to make up the song. In the pictures that I have shown here are an example of what is happening in the visuals when they are playing. The first picture is of a balloon popping and when this happens it is like a drum playing, which is a interesting way and possibly showing a broken heart. The last two pictures are very similar, visually they both have two men dressed up as old-fashioned music players, but the difference they are playing the people . The second picture being a piano and the last being bongo’s, it’s a fun way to visually represent the instruments. And it all has to do with the song name ‘skinny genes’ because they are both wearing jeans.
- 4. Genre Characteristics • Groups/girl or boy bands. Here I have used example of girl groups, typically they all wear similar outfits as you can see from the pictures. They don't typically pay any kind of instrument and just take it in turns of singing. There is also usually some product placement and you can see in the pictures. Group videos aren’t usually have most if the band in at once and a lot of the time there is a dance routine.
- 5. Voyeurism Voyeurism is all about the singer or performer looking at the camera. The whole idea is that they want the audience to feel involved with what they are saying. Because of the direct gaze it is supposed to feel personal and direct. Another part of voyeurism and the whole direct feel is to give you a feeling that you have an insight to their life.
- 6. Performance based videos This is LilyAllen’s ‘the Fear’ It’s a completely performance based video where it seems like an original 70s video, but in fact was made in 2009. They are effective in some ways because make you focus more on the lyrics and the message they are trying to get across. The interesting thing is that if you saw the pictures on there own you could possibly think it could be a love song when it is actually about sex.
- 7. Narrative based music videos This is Katy Perry’s ‘hot and cold’The whole video is about wedding not happening and the brides and bridesmaids going and getting the ‘run away’ groom. The good thing about narrative is that are usually more interesting than performance and relate to the song in some way which can help you understand what the song is about.
