Sergey Brin and Larry Page founded Google in 1996 while they were PhD students at Stanford University. Originally called "Backrub", they renamed it to "Google" in 1997 based on the misspelling of the word "googol", which represented the large number of web pages they aimed to index. Google started as a research project to develop a better algorithm for ranking web pages and has since expanded into many new products and services, including Chromecast, Google Glass, self-driving cars, and Google TV. It is now a subsidiary of the conglomerate Alphabet, with Sundar Pichai serving as CEO and introducing a new logo in 2015.
