Google celebrated its 13th birthday on September 27th. The company was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin as a search engine that used PageRank, an algorithm that determines search result rankings based on how many times terms appear on a webpage. Google has since expanded well beyond search to include applications like Gmail, Google Video, Google Images, and Google Maps. Google is now a global company so prevalent that the word "google" has become a verb defined as searching for something online in the Oxford Dictionary.

The 27th of September marked the 13th birthday of one of, if not the most, known companies around the world.The company was originally started by two students in America called Larry Page, and Sergey Brin. Google was originally just a search engine that used a different method of searching than other engines at the time. The conventional way of searching was checking for how many times the searched terms appeared on the webpage. Google’s search engine is different and uses an algorithm known as PageRank to determine which result ranks higher than others.
- 3. Google have since added many more applications to their website. There is Google Video (searches for videos instead of websites), Gmail, and Google Images. Possibly the biggest addition would be Google Maps, that allows you to look and see anywhere in the world as if you were actually there, it’s from a birds eye view though.
- 4. Now Google are a global company. To emphasise how huge they are, the word google has been entered into the Oxford dictionary. It’s definition is, “Search for something on the internet to find out information about it”. Used in a sentence it would look like this, “What’s the name of the actor that stars in Bruce Almighty?”, “Not sure, google it.”
