TERMINOLOGIES
TERMINOLOGIES
LATITUDE
Latitude is the measurement of distance north or
south of the Equator.
It is measured with 180 imaginary lines that form
circles around the Earth east-west, parallel to the
Equator.
These lines are known as parallels.
A circle of latitude is an imaginary ring linking all
points sharing a parallel.
LATITUDE
LONGITUDE
Longitude is the measurement east or west
of the prime meridian.
Longitude is measured by imaginary lines
that run around the Earth vertically (up and
down) and meet at the North and South
Poles.
These lines are known as meridians.
LONGITUDE
EQUATOR
An equator is an imaginary line around the
middle of a planet or other celestial body. It is
halfway between the North Pole and the
South Pole, at 0 degrees latitude.
An equator divides the planet into a
Northern Hemisphere and a Southern
Hemisphere.The Earth is widest at
its Equator.
EQUATOR
PRIME MERIDIAN
The Prime Meridian, as it passes through
Greenwich, England, is considered 0
degrees longitude.
Because both the equator and the Prime
Meridian are imaginary lines, they were
both established by mankind at some
point in human history.
PRIME MERIDIAN
THE TROPIC OF CANCER
The Tropic of Cancer, which is also referred
to as the Northern Tropic, is the most
northerly circle of latitude on Earth at which
the Sun can be directly overhead.
This occurs on the June solstice, when the
Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the
Sun to its maximum extent.
THE TROPIC OF CANCER
TROPIC OF CAPRICORN
Tropic of Capricorn is an imaginary
latitude line that goes around the globe
on the south of the equator at
approximately 23.50.
It is the most southern point on earth and
corresponds to the declination of the
sun's ecliptic to the celestial equator.
TROPIC OF CAPRICORN
THE ARCTIC CIRCLE
The Arctic Circle is a region on Earth that is
marked as one of the five major circles of latitude
on maps of our planet.
It is located between the Arctic to its north and
the NorthernTemperate Zone to its south.
Its counterpart in the Southern Hemisphere is
known as the Antarctic Circle
THE ARCTIC CIRCLE
THE NORTHTEMPERATE ZONE
Zones and climates. The north temperate
zone extends from (approximately 23.5°
north) to the Arctic Circle (approximately
66.5° north latitude).
The south temperate zone extends from
(approximately 23.5° south) to the Antarctic
Circle (approximately 66.5° south).
THE NORTHTEMPERATE ZONE
THE SOUTHTEMPERATE ZONE
The South temperate zone, between the
Tropic of Capricorn 23.5° S and the
Antarctic Circle 66.5° S. Covers 25.99% of
Earth's surface.
The South frigid zone, from Antarctic
Circle 66.5° S and the South Pole 90° S.
Covers 4.12% of Earth's surface.
THE SOUTHTEMPERATE ZONE
THE PHILIPPINES IS AN ARCHIPELAGO
THE PHILIPPINES IS AN ARCHIPELAGO
 The Philippines is an archipelago that comprises 7,641
islands with a total land area of 300,000 square kilometers
(115,831 sq mi). It is the world's 5th largest island country.
 The eleven largest islands contain 95% of the total land
area. The largest of these islands is Luzon at about 105,000
square kilometers (40,541 sq mi).
 The next largest island is Mindanao at about 95,000 square
kilometers (36,680 sq mi).The archipelago is around 800
kilometers (500 mi) from the Asian mainland and is located
betweenTaiwan and Borneo.
THE PHILIPPINES IS AN ARCHIPELAGO
 The Philippine archipelago is divided into three island
groups: Luzon,Visayas, and Mindanao.
 The Luzon islands include Luzon
itself, Palawan, Mindoro, Marinduque, Masbate, Romblon, Catanduanes, B
atanes and Polilio.
 TheVisayas is the group of islands in the central Philippines, the largest of
which
are: Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Samar, Siquijor, Biliran and Guimar
as.
 The Mindanao islands include Mindanao
itself, Dinagat, Siargao, Camiguin, Samal, plus the Sulu Archipelago,
composed primarily of Basilan, Sulu, andTawi-Tawi.
WHERE ISTHE PHILIPPINES LOCATED IN
TERMS OF LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE?
The Philippines are located at a latitude of
14° 34' 59.99" N and a longitude of 121° 00'
0.00" E.
The latitude of the Philippines expresses the
country's location relative to the equator.
That said, the Philippines is above the
equator and part of the northern hemisphere.
