Green Roof Outfitters
Green Roof Outfitters (GRO) is a
manufacturer and supplier of a
proprietary modular green roof
system, with it’s headquarters based
in Charleston, SC.
GRO is able to offer the fully
vegetated system or just the needed
components in the U.S. and Canada,
and currently offers the components
internationally.
History & Facts
New Concept? Green roofs have
been around since ancient Babylon
Germany – first to mandate green
roofs and offer incentives to install
them
Chicago – first US city to implement
a significant green roof initiative
5,537,240 square feet installed in
North American cities in 2014
Internationally – many cities are
now adding mandates and
incentives for green roofs.
Green Roof Basics
What is a Green Roof?
Configuration of plants, soil, and
drainage layers installed on the roof
surface of a building.
Green Roof Types
Extensive – range from 2.5” to 5” in
depth and are the most common
because they are lighter systems
and require the least amount of
maintenance.
Intensive – range from 6” to 60” in
depth. A variety of plants can be
used, including shrubs and even
small trees, but it requires constant
maintenance and the structural loads
are significantly heavier.
Traditional Modular
Traditional vs. Modular
Traditional System
A multi-layered system that must
be installed by professionals
Modular System
An all-in-one system that can
easily be installed by anyone
All-in-one solution with simple installation
and maintenance.
Flexibility – easily add, remove or
rearrange modules at a later date.
Quicker installation vs. traditional green
roofs = reduced labor costs and a quicker
return on investment.
Fully Mature on delivery increasing the rate
of survival.
Simplicity – modules are placed directly on
the rooftops and do not require additional
work to the roof membrane.
Self-Contained System including drainage,
growing medium, and plants – No edging
required.

Environmental Benefits
Particulate matter and carbon
sequestered per 1,000 square feet of
green roof via storage & Photosynthesis…
Green roofs reduce storm water runoff.
Average annual storm water retained is…
Compared to conventional roof surfaces,
green roofs lower surface temperature by up to…
Green roofs can provide compensatory habitat
for rare and endangered species affected by
land development (ie: bees, butterflies, etc)
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this for new construction, and if not, do I need to install a new roof system?
Our green roof modules can easily be installed on new and existing buildings and roofs.
Is my building appropriate for a green roof?
Most homes and buildings with low sloping roofs are good candidates.
What do I need to know about my building before starting?
You will need to know the slope/pitch of the roof (lower sloping roofs are preferred)
The structural loading capacity of the roof (consult architect/engineer/builder)
Is the existing roof waterproofed and in good condition
What are the costs and ROI (return on investment) period?
The costs and discounts vary depending on the project size and whether you get the fully vegetated system or just the individual components.
Ballpark costs are $10/sf for the fully vegetated system or $2.25/sf for just the empty module & filter fabric. (The above pricing does not include
delivery or installation).
The ROI is calculated from conservative estimates of savings gained from both energy savings and from the extended life of the roof
membrane. The ROI can be greatly influenced by: project size, energy usage, level of insulation in roof, single vs. multi-story building and the
costs of the green roof materials/installation. We see typical ROI periods between 3 – 8 years. This does not even include the savings gained by
the storm water retention qualities or the added real estate values of the green roof.
Other things to consider:
Do you plan on utilizing it for a gathering space (access, added safety & live-loads to consider)
Is it going to be used for energy savings, aesthetics, storm water retention or a combination of these
Do you want the standard mix of green roof plants or do you need custom plantings
Do you need the fully vegetated system or just the empty modules & components to assemble
Are you planning to install the modules yourself or have them installed by others
