Grounding is a set of strategies to detach from emotional pain by focusing outward on the external world rather than inward. It can help those with PTSD or who feel overwhelmed emotions to gain control over their feelings and stay safe in the present. There are three main types of grounding: mental, which involves focusing the mind through tasks like describing one's environment; physical, which uses the senses through actions like touching objects or running water over hands; and soothing, or self-talk to calm oneself. While grounding aims to distract from negative feelings, it is a skill that requires practice, and different methods may work better for different people.
