Group dynamics
INTRODUCTION
Group dynamics is concerned with the interaction
and forces between group members in a social
situation .When the concept is applied to the study
of organization behavior the focus in on the
dynamics of members of formal or informal groups in
the organization .example It is concerned with the
gaining knowledge of group how they develop and
the effect of individual members and the
organization in which they function.
DEFINITION
According to Nisha clement
“Group as a unit of analysis in group dynamics is
of at most importance. It is a social unit which has
been variously defined.”
OR
According to Nisha clement
“ A group is a collection of people who interact
with one another accept rights and obligation as
members and who share a common identify’’
OBJECTIVE
 To identify and analyze the social processes that
impact on group development and performance.
 To acquire the skills necessary to intervene and
improve the individual and group performance in an
organizational context .
 To build more successful organization by applying
techniques that provides positive impact on goal
achievement.
Group dynamics
CLASSIFICATION
Group may be classified in different ways based on
purpose or goal extent of structure legal
organization or setting etc.
1-Formal group
2-Informal group
1-Formal group=Formal group are deliberately created
with structural association and are formed to
accomplish specific goals and carryout specific tasks
which are clearly related to the total organization
mission.
1-command group
2-task group
3-permanent formal group
4-temporary or momentary group
1. Command group –it is composed of subordinate who
report directly to a given boss
2. Task group-it represents a group working together to
complete a project or a job, Task groups boundaries are not
defined by its immediate hierarchical superior.
3. Permanent formal groups –these bodies such as top
management team work units in various department of the
organization staff group providing specialization service to
the working organization permanent committee etc.
4-Tempoaray or momentary group-these
are task forces or committee constituted for
temporary period
2-Informal group
Interest group-comes into being for the
purpose of achieving some common
objectives.
Friendship group-are social allegiances which
frequently extend outside a work situation .
Membership group-a membership group in
one to which one may consciously belong but
the which one has no more than a minimal
relationship.
Reference group-these group to which one
may belong and allow oneself to be influenced
its members behavior.
3. Group based on purpose
According to their purposes group may be
classified into the following .
1-Vocational group
2-Instrucational group
3-Government group
4-Religious group
5-Fraternal group
6-Recreational group
7-Social group
4-Group based on intimacy
Based on intimacy there are two type of group
1-Primary group-it is characterized by intimate face
to face association and co-ordination.
2-Non –primary or secondary group – are those
where the inter-relationship are more general
and remote .The membership such group is
generally voluntary and easily with drawled .
FACTOR INFLUENCING
1-Context of the team
The country and geographic region form a larger culture in
which the organization operates .All of those contribute
to the economic, political, technical and cultural climates
in which the organization the team and the individual
operate.
2-Organization
The kind of organization such as business or nonprofit along
with the organizational culture will influence the team
functioning just as much as the division of the
organization such as sales research operation etc.
3-Team identity –
Team have an identity of their own. This identity
steams from the relationship of the larger culture
the organizational culture the team configuration
the nature of the work and the qualities of the
individual .
4-Individuals
Within this mix of influence are the individuals
team members who likely has specific kinds of
work to perform and specific roles on the team.
STAGES OF GROUPS
The chair of a committee should understand
the issues of group dynamics including the
sequence through which each group most
proceed before can be accomplished LICKMEN
1965 has labeled these stage as forming,
storming and norming .
STAGES OF GROUP DEVELOPEMENT
GROUP BUILDING AND MAINTANCE
The group task roles listed above all contribute to the work to
be done .the group building roles that follow provide for the
groups care and maintance.
1. Encourager- accepts and praises all contributions view points
and ideas with warmth and solidarity.
2. Harmonizer- medicates harmonizes and resolves conflict.
3 Compromiser- yields his/her position in a conflict situations.
4-Standard setter- expresses or evaluates standard to evaluate
group process.
5-Group commentator- records group process and provide
feedback to the group.
6-Follower- accepts the groups ideas and listens to discussion
and decisions.
INDIVIDUALS ROLES OF GROUP
MEMBER
Group members also carry out roles that serve their own
needs .Group leaders most be able to manage member
roles so that individuals do not disrupt meeting.
• Aggressor
• Blocker
• Recognition
• Self –confessor
• Playboy
• Dominator
• Help seeker
• Special interest pleader
