Propaganda is used to control the citizens of society Quote : “On each landing, opposite the lift shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran.” (pg 5) The slogan “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” and the picture are used to make the people believe that without Big Brother, they would not be able to survive. The people believe that life would be horrible without Big Brother. This propaganda is meant to give the citizens of Oceania a feeling of assurance. The Party wants the people to only believe in what the Party tells them.
Propaganda is used to control the citizens of society(part 2)Quote : “Behind Winston’s back the voice from the telescreen was still babbling away about pig iron and the overfulfillment of the Ninth Three-Year Plan. (pg 6) This telescreen blasts a constant stream of propaganda which is designed to make all the failures of the Party into huge successes. This will prevent citizens from rebelling in any way because in their eyes, everything is successful and perfect.
Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted. Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance. Citizens live in a dehumanized state. Quote : “Whether he went on with the diary, or whether he did not go on with it, made no difference. The Thought Police would get him just the same. He had committed – would still have committed, even if he had never set pen to paper – the essential crime that contained all others in itself. Thoughtcrime, they called it. Thought – crime was not a thing that could be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you.” (pg 19) As you can see in this society, even independent thought is restricted. The people are to think whatever the Party tells them to think and this allows their own independence to fall apart. The citizens are perceived to be under 100% constant surveillance even in their own minds. And this one quote can allow to the reader to immediately realize that these citizens are living in a dehumanized state. Having our thoughts roam around in our own minds is a freedom that every human being should have. Having the Party rule one’s thoughts is not living like a human; it’s living like a robot.
Theme Statement: "With the power of psychological manipulation and physical control, the totalitarian rule eliminates one's thought and makes one's independence fall apart." Quote: “The cage was nearer; it was closing in. Winston heard a succession of shrill cries which appeared to be occurring in the air above his head. But he fought furiously against his panic. To think, to think, even with a split second left – to think was the only hope. Suddenly the foul musty odor of the brutes struck his nostrils. There was a violent convulsion of nausea inside him, and he almost lost consciousness. Everything had gone black. For an instant he was insane, a screaming animal.” After weeks of brutal torture, the final thing that makes Winston crack is the rat torture. Winston betrayed Julia, his love, and now there is nothing more that’s left of their love. After going through the physical torture, Winston no longer has emotional loyalty. He no longer has independence. With the power of physical control, the Party eliminated Winston’s thought and replaced it with the Party’s version of reality (2+2=5).
