Around 22,000 people experience homelessness in Arkansas at some point during the year, with between 7,400 to 8,000 homeless each night. The Little Rock Compassion Center was established in October 1998 to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless in Little Rock. It provides nightly beds for men, women, and families, as well as a food pantry that made over 142,000 meals in 2005. Around 25% of the homeless population in Little Rock have mental illnesses, 40% have substance abuse issues, and 15% have both.
