As the economy bounced back from the crisis of the 1970s, Americans placed a greater emphasis on materialism and making money. Yuppies – Young urban professionals who bought luxury cars, designer clothes, and other expensive items
The Eighties saw an increase of drug abuse Cocaine and crack cocaine abuse became more popular especially in urban areas First Lady Nancy Reagan launched “Just Say No” campaign 1980 – Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) formed
1981 – Researchers identified a new disease that was causing seemingly healthy young men to die Called “auto immune deficiency disease” AIDS Weakened the immune system, making people more susceptible to illnesses like pneumonia
First noticed among homosexual men but quickly spread to heterosexual men and women Spread through unprotected sex, blood transfusions, and sharing needles while abusing drugs
Reagan administration didn’t do much to deal with the crisis 1985 - Rock Hudson became the first major celebrity to reveal he had AIDS Finally in 1987 Reagan addressed the crisis in a speech By that point, 36,058 Americans had contracted the disease and 20,849 had died from it
December 8, 1980 – Mark David Chapman approached John Lennon outside of his apartment and asked for an autograph. Lennon spent the next few hours at a recording studio. As he returned to his apartment building, Chapman shot him four times Lennon was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.

May 1981 – A Turkish sniper shot Pope John Paul II in Vatican City Shot 4 times, nearly died from blood loss Assassin was sentenced to life in prison and was later forgiven by the Pope

1983 – Sally Ride became the first American woman in space January 28, 1986 – The space shuttle Challenger broke apart about a minute after takeoff On board was teacher Christa McAuliffe, who was part of the mission as part of a project to increase student interest in math and science
