Why? ● Many countries don’t have the infrastructure for internet ● Internet is considered a basic human right (2011) ● To promote Facebooks product in more places 2003 World summit on the information society 2009-2010 BBC poll shows internet is a right 2011 UN Determines internet is a human right 2016 UN condemns countries for interfering with internet access
- 4. How it works ● Provide limited internet to developing countries ● Uses Satellites and drones ● This bypasses the need for infrastructure
- 5. Secret Sauce? Well… kind of “Hey! You don’t have internet, here is internet” “Oh wow, I am glad I now have internet, I did not before” “It only has some websites though, not all of them” “That’s okay! This is much better than no internet at all!” ● Takes advantage of people ● It is free, or very cheap ● Who would turn this down?
- 6. Competition ● Really, there is no direct competition ● It is a non-profit, so they are not competing for market share ● Helps reduce competition from facebook’s competitors Global ad revenue in billions of dollars
- 7. Financials ● Funding: Essentially unlimited ● Does not make money ● Non-Profit
- 8. But... ● Facebook is profiting indirectly ● This summer, Facebook passed 2b users (only 3b have internet) ○ Over 1B in China ● By bringing internet to other countries, Facebook gains users, and ad impressions (aka $$$) ● Many of these are untapped markets, especially for online advertising

- 12. Criticisms: Violates Net Neutrality ● This internet being provided is NOT Neutral ● Gives Facebook control over many countries ● Seen as too much power for Facebook ● What if Facebook wanted to abuse this power?
- 13. Banned in India ● India banned the service for violating net neutrality ● Facebook launched a campaign on Facebook to prevent this ○ Example of an abuse of power ● Other countries may follow suit
- 14. My prediction ● As Internet.org grows it will gain more criticism ● Facebook will lose control over the websites provided on it ● This will require much stricter regulations ● They are going to get sued ● Just because it is for charity does not mean Facebook has good intentions!
