MIASM
Oxford Speaking Dict. – Miasm / Miasma-
n. a polluting, oppressive or foreboding
atmosphere; an infectious or noxious
vapor, specially from putrescent organic
matter, which pollute atmosphere;

PSORA
 The word PSORA is a Hebrew word PSORAT, MEANS a
:-
 “GROOVE”
 “FAULT”,
 “A POLLUTION”,
 “A STIGMA”
 Hahnemann referred to Psora as a "hydra-headed
monster".
 PSORA is that most ancient , most universal ,most
destructive and yet most misapprehended.

SOME POINTS FROM THE CHRONIC DISEASES
 Vertigo ;on turning around briskly, he falls all over.
 Dizziness ; inability to perform mental labour.
 Headache as if skull were about to burst
 Scalp full of dandruff , with or without itching.
 The hair of head frequently falls off.
 .

 Sallow yellow complexion
 Far –sightedness , short – sightedness , night blindness .
 Pain fullness in various spots of face
 Sense of smell perverted
 The red of lips is dry ,scabby, peeling off ; it chaps
 Tongue – white ,coated ,pale , dry , full of deep furrows
 Bitter sour taste in mouth in morning
 Putrid and fetid taste in mouth
 Eructation empty ,loud , with taste of food ,sour , rancid

 The ruling complain in an part if the body are excited
after eating fresh fruit, esp. if this is acidulous.
 Ravenous hunger, appetite without hunger.
 Weather prophets.
 Perspiration comes too easily
 Sleepiness during the day, constant yawning , stretching of
limbs.
 Vivid dreams , somnambulism
 Disturbances of the mind and spirit of all kind
 Attacks of fear , from fire ,being alone insane etc.

MORE POINTS OF PSORA
 Lack of certain elements in the system and inability to
assimilate them from foods.
 Lack of balance in the equilibrium of health that manifests
through a hypersensitivity of impressions causing the
functional disturbances.
 “SENSATION AS IF” BELLONGS TO PSORA.
 Meat stimulate the psoric patient and arouses the
underlying psoric condition Oversensitive to odors;
 Unusual odors awaken him from sleep.
 Perfumes make him feel ill and faint.
 Painful boils and pimples on septum.
 Always hungry. Has desires and longings for many and
various things

MIND
 The “itchy mind”. anxiousness and also
hunger at night.
 There can be feelings of being forsaken,
despair, anxiety about the future or any
situation.
 The psoric miasm has strong religions
 Constant worries as well, such as fear of
change, fear of health and fear of poverty.
 There can be hopeless as well as guilt and
melancholy.

SKIN
 Skin is dry rough dirty or unhealthy appearing.
 Psoric patients the “great unwashed” and <s roughness of
the skin and irritability.
 Stubborn marked persistent constipation.
 Eruptions ,which after scratching burn. Nettle rash
,pimples without pain , Freckles , liver spots etc.
 Increased susceptibility to cold

SYCOSIS
The word Sycosis derives from the
word “syco”, Greek word for fig.
 Sycosis is named the "fig wart disease"
& the miasm of excess

SYCOSIS
 Slowness Suppression Shame
 Concentration levels are low,
 Confused mentally and physically
 Desires more for less efforts.
 They also have a lot of delusions, illusions and
 hallucinations.
 Sycotic children have a lot of non-constructive,
 negative or fixed ideas
 Because Sycosis is the miasm of excess, the phrase "sex,
drugs and rock ‘n roll" symbolizes the idea
 “Work-aholism", chronic over work, ambition, striving
to achieve more success, more possessions. Compulsive
behaviors

SYCOTIC CHILD
 Sycotic children usually do not enjoy playing
because of their laziness and sluggishness
 Obese ,sluggish ,lazy slow to act
 Play indoor game
 They always desire to win , by whichever means
 Paintings of sycotic children are shabby,
disorganized and with dark colors

 Jealously ,corruption stealing evil
 They are easily moved to Anger, Rage, Hurt, Irritability,
Jealousy and Suspiciousness
 Find it very difficult to Express there emotions
 Forgive and forget is not the policy
 Delusions of heart being trapped
 Imagines he is gravely ill from which he
 Will not recover and will die…and predicts the time of his
death
 True hypochondriacs
 Collecting money becomes an obsession.
 Eat excessively and out of proportion
 Find Certain unusual smells pleasant.
 Swelling in the joints (edema) and connective
tissues as well as arthritis and rheumatism

 Mucus discharges and catarrhs are thick and constant.
 There growths of warts, moles and also eczema.
 Arthritis, rheumatism, asthma, catarrhs, bronchitis,
cystitis and urinary ailments are all partly or mainly sycotic
in character.
 There can be thick, course and excessive growth of
hair and ridged or thick nails.
 The reproductive and hormonal problems associated with
sycotic miasm including dysmenorrhea (menstrual
cramps), herpes, ectopic pregnancies (blockages of the
fallopian tubes), miscarriages, menstrual difficult sterility.
 There is often a slower recovery from disease from a
sluggish defense mechanism.
 The sycotic person's conditions are always worse in
cold, worse damp, worse rainy season. They
are better active or often at the seaside.

SYPHILIS
 All forms of mental Retardation fall into this miasm
 This miasm is full of :-
 Destruction negativity
 Degeneration Violence
 Controls are lost
 Lack of perception, thinking , decision making.
 Loss of value in life.
 Paucity of thoughts
 Win at any cost and will resort to any unfair means for that
All symptoms are worse at night.

MIND
 Dull Stupid Stubborn Morose
 Disinterest or aversion to everything
 Their way of playing with toys is breaking them
 Cunning
 Vindictive malicious and cruel
 get angry on trifle matters
 cannot bear contradiction
 obstinate and headstrong

 Suicidal acts without even thinking once about the
consequences
 Overtly courageous and perform dangerous or
illegal acts
 no love or respect
 Sexual perversions
 young rebels of society belong to syphilis.

 Not content with anything in life

 Syphilitic miasm is the last and final stage of any disease
(battle).
 Sensitivity is very low Physical complaints:
 Premature senility
 Old withered look in children
 Appetite poor
 Bloody stools
 Ulceration
 Gangrene
 Continuous pain of nerves & bone
 Malignancy at a very young age

ACUTE MIASM
 Acute miasm is a dynamic disease causing agent
which causes specific infectious diseases having
almost fixed manifestations.
 These are of 2 types
1) Recurrent - Recur in the same manner more than
once in a life of a person .
Eg. Yellow fever , asiatic cholera
2) Non – recurrent – also called fixed miasm.these
attack only once in a life time .
Eg. Smallpox ,whooping cough

HALF SPIRITUAL MIASM
 The miasm of measles ,scarlet fever , pox
etc. is called the half spiritual miasm
because after completing their parasitical
existence in the system they die out leaving
the organism to recover soon.

HALF ACUTE MIASM
 The miasm of hydrophobia has been termed
as half acute miasm. The miasm takes
effect the moment a person gets bitten by a
mad dog . As soon as malady develops
inside the organism ,the madness breaks
out as an acute , quickly fatal disease.

ACCESSORY MIASM
 The lymph of the inoculated cow –pox ,
besides the protective ,matter contains a
contagion capable of producing a general ;
cutaneous eruption of different nature.
 This usually consists of small dry pimples
resting on small red areola, frequently
intermingled with round red cutaneous spots
with violent itching.

MIASM AT CELLULAR AND GENETIC LEVEL
“Disease Manifestations are
Basically Defense
Mechanism at Work”.

 “Body always speaks the minds language.”
 The symptoms of pain, inflammation ,
swelling , redness, or stiffness ,indiscretion ,
growth and destruction of tissues are result
of the body’s defense mechanism at work
.
 The idea of individualization has its root in
every cell

CELL INJURED BODY IS DISEASED
 Vijaykar has concentrated on cell to emphasize and
mature our understanding that basically every phenomena
in the disease process is emanating at cellular level and
therefore Hahnemann’s understanding of causes of
chronic disease .i.e. is
 Miasm is something which has its first expression at
the level of cell.

HAHNEMANN & MODERN SCIENCE
 PSORA is the first
reaction to stimulus .
 Psora is the only
real fundamental
cause.
All the diseases of
Sycosis &syphilis are
based on Psora i.e.
Psora is mother of all
miasm
 Physiological
defense i.e.
INFLAMMAION is the
reaction to stimulus.
 Physiological
defense is the 1st
response to cell injury
All other defenses
are secondary i.e.
constructive
/destructive

FIRST DEFENSE: INFLAMMATION
 It is physiological defense response; it is used to get rid of
the invasive stimuli. It is preceded by increased
sensitivity and irritation. Inflammatory response is
closely intermingled with the process of repair.
 Without inflammation, infections would go unchecked.
Wound would never heal and injured organs and tissues
might remain permanently ulcerated and damaged.
This is Psora.

SECOND DEFENSE
 : After the first defense has failed second line of
defense starts .
 After the limit of reversible physiological changes is
crossed, certain changes take place in the genes, which
induce irreversible changes in the morphology or
structure of the cells.
 The pathology, which can arise out of such a defense
include growth or thickening pathologies such as
polyps, warts, cysts , tumors, atherosclerotic plaques,
deposition of pigments and minerals.
 This is Sycosis.

THIRD DEFENSE:
 When body find it difficult to defend itself by
either physiological changes or the constructive
changes. The cell may under go changes at the
genetic level. It shifts
its gear to defend or to save the whole organism by
destroying a part of it. The pathological conditions
that arise out of such defense include al destructive
pathologies like gangrenes, necrosis, and ulcers etc
.This is syphilis Miasm at work.


THERE ARE ONLY 3 MIASMS & ALL DISEASES
ORIGINATE THEIR
 Hahnemann states that ‘miasm is at the root of all
diseases’. Modern pathology also confirms that
cell defense response is of three Types
 Hahnemann’s description of itch [Psora], fig
warts[Sycosis] and chancre[syphilis] matches
with the three basics defense by cells, namely
physiological defense [Psora],constructive
defense[Sycosis] and destructive
defense[syphilis].
 .

 Tuberculosis of lung is a disease which at pathological
level expresses in three different stages:
 1. Inflammation of the pleura [pleuritis] or the lungs at the
onset of infection with tubercular bacilli.
 2. Tubercle formation in the lungs.
 3. Cavitations in the lungs.
 This shows that defense mechanism is physiological and
therefore psoric in the stage
 1. In the stage two defense mechanism changes to
constructive defense giving rise to
 tubercles, therefore is Sycosis. In the third stage the
destructive pathology prevails to
 give cavitations showing that the defense mechanism is
destructive . Thus there is no need for any other miasm

SYCOSIS
THE CONSTRUCTIVE DEFENSE
 Over expressive
 Cowardice and fear of death
 Hard on inferiors and soft with superiors
 Avarice for knowledge , desire to achieve more and become
greatest/unique
 Thick skinned
 Crying , wailing ,attract pity of others, moaning grumbling
,involuntary sighing.

 Charitable with expectation to recompense.
 Overflowing love for society and god.
 Gifts given by them will be huge in size, expensive ,of
bright colors &reflect imp. Of giver.

SECOND PHASE OF SYCOSIS
 Bashful , shy , hide their faces
 Hide behind person and furniture
 Cowardiceness
 Never cry or express their grief
 Quiet ,reserved , introverted , hate coming to lime light ,
secretive , desire solitude
 Hard , angry , dictatorial . Never expresses his love
 Under expressed happiness .

SYPHILITIC
 Haphazard , awkward , uncontrolled and unpredictable
activities.
 Ugliness & weirdness in both body and mind.
 Indiscretion
 Cruel and do immoral acts , open lascivious /lewdness
 All emotions are out of control
 Criminals who kill , murder without remorse

 In “The Spirit of Homeopathy”, Sankaran had
described disease as ‘delusion’, the ‘awareness’ of
which becomes a ‘cure’ Sankaran evolved his ideas of
miasms by trying to find the common theme in the mental
states and delusion of known anti-miasmatic remedies.
From there he extended the concept to the physical and
pathological states corresponding to the miasms.

ACUTE MIASM:
The feeling is of an acute threat and the reaction is strong
and instinctive.
 Some remedies: Aconitum, Belladonna, Stramonium,
Veratrum-album, Arnica, Croton –tig , Chocolate
 Sensation: Sudden, intense, acute, violent threat to life.
 Reaction: Violent, instinctive, strong , urgent.
 Depth: Acute, critical.
 Degree of desperation: Do or die! Critical
 Pace: Sudden, rapid, violent.
 Pattern: Comes suddenly, last short time, ends suddenly,
either in death or recovery.
 Attitude of the patient: Childlike, instinctive, violent.

TYPHOID MIASM:
The feeling is that of a critical situation which, if properly
handled for a critical period, will end in total recovery. The
reaction is an intense struggle against it.
Some remedies: Bryonia, Nux vomica, Rhus-tox,
Chamomilla, Hyoscyamus, Baptisia, Paris-q, Nux-m
 Sensation: Critical, short-lived, life threatening situation.
 Reaction: Concentrated effort and struggle.
 Depth and corresponding degree of hope or
desperation: Acute, hopeful if concentrated effort is put
in. But it is still critical and life threatening.
 Pace: Sudden, intense.
 Pattern: Concentrated effort followed by rest.
 Attitude of the patient: Childlike

PSORA:
The feeling is that of a difficult situation where one has to
struggle in order to succeed. There is anxiety with doubts about
his ability, but he is hopeful and failure does not mean the end
of the world.
He must struggle in order to recover or maintain his position.
 Some remedies: Sulphur, Psorinum, Lycopodium.
 Sensation: The situation is a difficult one.
 Reaction: Struggle and effort to maintain or recover position.
 Depth and corresponding degree of hope or desperation:
Very hopeful
 Pattern: Continuous struggle.
 Attitude of the patient: Hopeful and he must struggle to
maintain position.

RINGWORM MIASM
It is characterized by an alternation between periods of
struggle with anxiety about success, and periods of despair
and giving up.
Some remedies: Calcarea sulphurica, Calcarea Silicata,
Magnesium sulphuricum., Teucrium, Sarsaparilla, Dulcamara,
Taraxacum.
 Sensation: Doubts about success.
 Reaction: Alternation between struggle and giving up.
Unsuccessful efforts.
Hope alternating with giving up. Yet it is not fatal and he can
live with it.
 Pattern: Periods of effort alternating with periods of inactivity.
 Attitude of the patient : Sometimes the task seems possible
and he is hopeful and struggles to overcome it. Then after a
while he feels that he is inadequate and will not succeed. So
he gives up.

MALARIAL MIASM:
There is an acute feeling of threat that comes up
intermittently, in phases, between which there is an
underlying chronic, fixed feeling of being deficient.
This miasm is characterized by sudden, acute
manifestations that come up from time to time,
followed by periods of quiescence.
Some remedies: Berb-v, Capsicum, Cina, China,
Colocynths, Spigelia.
 Sensation: He is unfortunate in having a fixed
weakness within himself. This obstructs or hinders
him so that he cannot go ahead and from
intermittently because of it he is subject to an acute
threat or attack to his life.

desperation: An underlying chronic, fixed condition
with intermittent acute manifestations.
 Reaction: Acceptance of his condition and day
dreaming
 Pattern: Sudden, acute manifestations which come
up from time to time followed by periods of
quiescence.
 Attitude of the patient: Unfortunate, stuck,
hindered obstructed and from time to time subject to
acute attacks. He can do nothing but accept the
situation and day dream.

SYCOSIS:

The feeling is that there is fixed, irremediable weakness
within the self. The action is to attempt to cope with it and
hide it from others; hence he covers it up with egotism,
compulsive acts, is very secretive, etc.
Some remedies Copaiva, Medorrhinum, Mangifera,
Pulsatilla, Sabadila, Thuja.
 Sensation: There is a fixed, irremedial weakness within
the self..
 Reaction: Acceptance. Cover up, hiding, secrecy.
desperation: It is not fatal, but it is fixed and he will have
to accept it and live with it.
 Pace: Fixed
 Pattern: Fixed
 Attitude of the patient: I cannot do anything about it, so
I must accept it and live with it. I am okay so long as I am
able to cover it up.

TUBERCULAR MIASM:
 The feeling is of intense oppression and a desire for change.
The reaction is intense, hectic activity in order to break free
from this oppression.
Some remedies: Abrotanum, Acalypha-indica, Agraphis,
Tuberculinum, Drosera, Calcarea-phosphorica., Balsum-p.
 Sensation: Intense oppression; things are closing in or
narrowing down and there is a desperate desire for change.
 Reaction: Intense, hectic activity in order to break free from
the oppression.
Desperate with very little hope of breaking free.
 Pace: Very rapid and destructive.
 Attitude of the patient: If he has to come out of this intense
oppression there must be a change which may be radical and
violent, and for this hectic activity is required.

CANCER MIASM:

There is a feeling of weakness and incapacity within, and the need to
perform exceedingly well and live up to very high expectations. The
reaction is a superhuman effort, stretching himself beyond the limits of
his capacity. It is continuous, prolonged struggle which seems to have
no end. His survival depends on it, for failure would mean, death and
destruction.
Some remedies: Anacardium, Anhalonium, Bellis-per, Carcinosinum,
Nitricum acidum, Argentum nitricum, Ignatia, Staphysagria,
 Sensation: Everything around him is chaotic and he is too small to
gain control over the chaos as there is a fixed weakness within him.
 Reaction: In order to gain control over the chaos he must make a
superhuman effort and stretch himself far beyond his limited capacity.
 Depth and corresponding degree of hope or desperation: Desperate
with very little hope of succeeding, but it is not altogether hopeless.
 Pace: Rapid, destructive
 Attitude of the patient: Trying to gain control over a situation that is far
beyond his capacity. Demanding too much of himself. Perfectionist.

LEPROSY MIASM
The feeling is of intense oppression, intense hopelessness,
isolation and an intense desire for change.
Some remedies: Secale-cor, Hura , Ocimum-s, Aloe, Cicuta,
Mandragora.
 Sensation: Intense oppression and things are closing in and
narrowing down on him so that he is completely isolated and
alone. He feels that he is dirty and disgusting and unfortunate
and so subject to this kind of oppression and isolation. He
desperately desires a very radical change to overcome the
oppression but there is almost no hope of succeeding.
 Reaction: Violence. Shuts himself up. Avoids the sight of people.
Desperation but almost no hope of succeeding.
 Pace: Very rapid and destructive.
 Attitude of the patient: He is doomed and so he can do nothing
about it so he gives up.

SYPHILIS MIASM:

The feeling is that he is faced with a situation beyond salvage,
leading to complete hopelessness and despair. In a desperate effort,
he tries to change the situation and the result is usually destruction.
Some remedies: Mercurius-solubilis, Syphilinum, Aurum-metallicum,
Baryta carbonica, Hoang –nan , Leptandra, Echinacea, Clematis-
erecta.
 Sensation: The situation is beyond salvage and there is no hope of
succeeding.
 Reaction: Desperate, last ditch effort or despair.
 Depth and corresponding degree of hope or desperation: Very
deep. Great desperation. Absolutely no hope of success.
 Pace: Destructive
 Attitude of the patient: The situation is completely out of his reach.
But he must make a last ditch, desperate attempt to come out of it
even though there is no hope of succeeding.
