THE HAMPTON UNIVERSITY TENNIS SEASON
OFFICIALLY ENDED AFTER THE MEN’S TEAM
LOST FOUR TO TWO AGAINST FLORIDA A
AND M AT THE MEAC TOURNAMENT.
ALTHOUGH IT WAS A TOUGH LOSS…THE
PIRATES CELEBRATED OVERCOMING THE
MANY OBSTACLES THEY FACED THIS YEAR.
TEAM CAPTAIN LUKE THOMPSON SHARES
SOME OF THE HARDSHIPS OF THE SEASON.

<SOT>
The season was really interesting. It was
quite tough…I played quite a high position on
the team and I was injured. So, I wasn’t able
to play this year. That kind of meant all the
freshmen that came in had to step up quite a
bit.

THIS YEAR THE MEN’S TEAM WELCOMED
THREE NEW FRESHMEN RECRUITS FROM
NEW ZEALAND, BARBADOS AND CALIFORNIA.
WITH THE LOSS OF THEIR CAPTAIN AND A
SHORTAGE OF PLAYERS DUE TO INJURIES
AND MEAC REGULATIONS THE FRESHMEN
WERE GIVEN MORE RESPONSIBILITY.
ADJUSTING TO COLLEGE TENNIS WAS A
CHALLENGE FOR NEW ZEALAND NATIVE
CHARLES HUDSON

<SOT>
As a freshman it’s a little bit different to
regular tennis back home.
It was a lot of pressure to start out with. I feel
that the team was expecting a lot out of
ourselves just to prove that we were worthy
of making the team.

THE EXTRA RESPONSIBILITY THEY WERE
GIVEN VERY WELL.

Obviously, the freshmen add a lot to the
program…add life, add their talents that
weren’t here before. Seeing these guys blend
together and the compliments that each one
of them brought to the program really
enriched us.

NOT ONLY DID THE TEAM HAVE ISSUES WITH
INJURIES AND PLAYER ELIGIBILITY…THEY
ALSO STARTED THE SPRING SEASON LATE.

Most schools played matches around January
and February. Our first match was late
February. With that being said, a lot of
schools had an advantage in terms of match
play. They knew how to handle nerves and
everything way better than we did right out
the gate.

THE SEASON HAD A ROCKY START WITH
SEVERAL LOSSES AGAINST MAJOR
TEAMS…BUT THE PIRATES STAYED POSITIVE.
THE MEN’S TEAM CELEBRATED THEIR FIRST
VICTORY WINNING 4-3 AGAINST WAYNE
STATE UNIVERSITY IN FLORIDA OVER SPRING
BREAK. THEY WENT ON TO END THEIR
SEASON WITH 6 WINS AND 15 LOSSES.
MEANWHILE, THE LADY PIRATES
CELEBRATED THEIR FIRST 7 TO 0 VICTORY
AGAINST COPPIN STATE AND ENDED THEIR
SEASON WITH 3 WINS 14 LOSSES.
STANDUP
ALTHOUGH THEIR SEASONS ARE OVER, THE
MEN AND WOMEN’S TEAMS ARE
REFLECTING AND THINKING OF WAYS THEY
CAN IMPROVE PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY
FOR THE FALL SEASON.
<SOT >
We’re such a young team it’s hard to so
mentally prepared to go any play
tournaments and matches. We’re definitely
working on that.
XCU racquet and player walking <SOT >
Mentally I’ll reflect on this season…y’know
things I did wrong. I’ll go home this
summer…train with my trainers back
home…work on a few shots…get a little bit
faster, a little bit stronger and come back
ready for the fall season.

MOST IMPORTANTLY…THE TEAM AGREES
THAT NEXT SEASON THEY NEED TO PRACTICE
MORE AS A TEAM.
WITH THE PROSPECT OF TALENTED NEW
RECRUITS, MORE UNITY AND FOCUS…BOTH
TEAMS ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FALL
2016 TENNIS SEASON.
