This document discusses harmonic distortion and intermodulation distortion in electrical systems. It defines harmonics as frequency components that are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency, such as 50Hz in India. Harmonics are caused by non-linear loads. Intermodulation distortion occurs when multiple frequencies interact in a non-linear system, producing new frequencies that are the sum and difference of the original frequencies. Both distortions can be measured by total harmonic distortion, with 7% or less considered acceptable. Harmonic and intermodulation distortions can overload systems and devices, and solutions include filters and active power filters.
