- 1. Havergal College is a university-preparatory independent school for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. Founded in 1894, the school is situated on a 22-acre campus in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The student body numbers approximately 925 students, of whom 660 are in the Upper School and 265 are in the Junior School. In an age of instant and global communication, young women must think critically and creatively, make thoughtful and logical decisions, facilitate change and solve problems. They must be willing to stand by their own decisions, to stand up for others and to have strong personal values. They must be innovative and persistent, respect differences and explore opportunities for learning at every stage of life. - 2. Culture of Capability At Havergal College, we create a culture of capability by educating the whole girl. In all of our actions, programs and activities we empower every girl with confidence, competence and resilience. A Havergal educated girl believes that anything is possible. She is not afraid to ask questions or try new things. She knows that she can make a difference in the world. Spirituality at Havergal Built on Anglican values, Havergal honours its traditions while respecting diverse faiths. Community Prayers provide a focus for spiritual growth and include hymns and prayers, as well as opportunities to learn about other faiths and our role as global citizens. Each student is encouraged to reflect on, and to develop, her own spirituality. Co-curricular Activities Havergal offers a wide range of co-curricular activities to meet the interests of every student. Individual talents and interests can be pursued through activities and participation in clubs, athletics and school life, including more than 70 athletic teams and outstanding music, art, drama and literary programs. Leadership, Community & House At Havergal, every student from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 is encouraged to develop leadership skills and a lifelong commitment to her community. Throughout her time at Havergal, each student belongs to one of 10 Houses. In the House system, girls come together in smaller, crossgrade groups and learn to cooperate for the common good and thus develop qualities of initiative and leadership. As she progresses through the Junior (JK to Grade 6), Middle (Grades 7 to 8) and Senior (Grades 9 to 12) Schools, her leadership and level of responsibility increases. Students are encouraged to develop long-lasting relationships with school community partnerships and in individual programs. All courses are university preparatory and are at the advanced level. A credit is granted with the successful completion of a course for which a minimum of 110 hours has been scheduled. Many students elect to write Advanced Placement exams. Upon graduation, students receive the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

- 4. Yasmin Alameddine Cornell University, Communications A multilinguist, Yasmin speaks English, Arabic, Turkish, Spanish and French. During her two years at Havergal, she was elected House and Clubs Co-Prefect and was involved in the Model United Nations (UN), the Environment Club and the Spanish Club. In Grade 11 she participated in the Global Experience Program excursion to Nicaragua, where she helped build a school. Yasmin also volunteered with student communications and technology projects (video editing, layout and printing) and stage-managed school productions. She spent the summer of 2011 gaining valuable work experience in the communications, finance and business fields by interning at a newspaper and a bank in Lebanon. Yasmin is currently a Communications student at Cornell University. Samantha Bennett University of St. Andrews, Philosophy and Ancient History As Head of the Environment Club in her graduating year, Sam implemented an organic waste collection program at the Upper School. During her four years at Havergal, Sam was also involved in the Model UN, played basketball, rugby and hockey and participated in the ski and triathlon teams. She is currently studying Philosophy and Ancient History at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. She decided she wanted to go to university in the United Kingdom after falling in love with the region while on exchange to England in Grade 9. In her final days as a Havergal student, she participated in the Global Experience Program excursion to Reykjavik, Iceland, where she explored the unique geographical areas of a tectonic plate boundary. Riya Chandaria Brown University, Engineering When Riya was not busy organizing community events such as food drives at Havergal, she was rowing, playing rugby, participating in the Debate Team, mentoring the Middle School Robotics Team and spending time with her Best Buddy (special needs) partner. In the summer of 2011, she helped convert sediment into fuel cells as a lab assistant on a research project for a professor at the University of Toronto. Riya is currently putting her research skills to work at Brown University, where she is studying Engineering. After 14 years as a Havergal student, this Old Girl is thankful for the many opportunities to learn and grow at the school. Jiwon Chun University of Toronto, English and Philosophy A boarding student for four years, Jiwon was elected Junior Boarding Don for her enthusiasm and involvement in the school. In addition to being a member of the Symphony Orchestra, DECA and the Model UN, she was also a contributor to the creative writing publication The Bluestocking and a member of the Havergal Global Ideas Institute Team at the University of Toronto. A highlight of her time at Havergal was her involvement in the Global Experience Program excursion to Costa Rica in 2011, where she learned about the coffee trade and supported a coffee co-op, founded by Havergal Old Girl Marigold Murray Genis 1953. She is currently a student at Trinity College in the University of Toronto, studying English and Philosophy, and is a member of the selective Woodsworth One Program. Katie Gerstle Quest University, Arts and Sciences A student at Havergal for 12 years, Katie devoted her time and energy to athletics and academics. In her graduating year, she was the Head of Athletes in Motion (AIM), a student-led organization that uses sport and physical activity as a vehicle for social change. As a part of AIM, Katie travelled to the Bahamas to volunteer at Sandilands Hospital to use sports as a rehabilitation tool. Katie is currently a student at Quest University in British Columbia, working on a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences. “Havergal gives students the opportunity to spread their wings and get involved in whatever suits them; the school provides students with the opportunity to find their niche,” she says. Shannon Lacombe University College London, Biochemistry An actress and an avid scientist, Shannon has great life-balance. During her four years as a student at Havergal, she was involved in writing, directing and acting in many of the school’s productions. In her graduating year she was elected House Captain by her peers and was involved in photography and writing for the school yearbook and the student-led newspaper, Behind the Ivy. Currently she is a student at the University College London, where she also hopes to pursue a Master’s degree in science. She feels that Havergal helped nourish her love of learning and she will miss the supportive and friendly faculty and students at Havergal. Michaela Milgrom Princeton University, Liberal Arts Michaela loves the stage. In her six years at Havergal, she was involved in approximately 20 full-scale stage productions both at the school and at various youth acting groups in Toronto and abroad. She was also involved with the Senior Choir and participated in student government as a member of the Community Council and House Executive. Along with her academic and artistic pursuits, Michaela was a Havergal scholarship recipient who enjoyed studying English and history. Currently she is exploring her academic passions as a Liberal Arts student at Princeton University. Michaela is open to trying different things in her life, but one thing she is certain of —she wants to make a career doing something she’s passionate about.
