Programme Aims:
The programme aims to provide students with:
1 a historical perspective on the development of English from its inception to the present day;
2 a sound understanding of key linguistic concepts relating to the grammatical structure and sound system of
English;
3 coverage of topics primarily focusing on sociolinguistic dimensions;
4 contextualised understanding of the theories and methods applied to the study of the English Language;
5 developed skills in retrieving information, analysing texts and academic writing in the subject.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course all students on English Language should be able to:
1 demonstrate a sound understanding of the relationship between language and society according to factors such
a class, age, gender, sexuality, religious identity and ethnicity;
2 formulate a hypothesis, gather evidence and construct a sophisticated argument;
3 engage in informed discussion on the ethical and theoretical issues involved in contemporary sociolinguistic
research;
4 show a critical appreciation of the multi-faced nature of the discipline, and its complex relationships to other
disciplines and forms of knowledge;
5 demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the main theories and fields of investigation concerning the
broader human language faculty;
6 show a critical awareness and understanding of the social history of language;
7 access and manipulate linguistic databases.

4.4 Grading scheme and, if available, grade distribution guidance:
Marks of 40 or above are pass marks, carrying grades A-E, and can be interpreted as follows.
70-100 A - Standard equivalent to first class honours
60-69 B - Standard equivalent to upper second class honours
50-59 C - Standard equivalent to lower second class honours
40-49 D or E - Standard equivalent to lower second class honours
A grade ending "K" indicate that the assessment was a "Key Honours Assessment".
A mark below 40 normally indicates that work was not passed.
F or U grades indicate failure;
M grades indicate that work was not submitted, due to valid mitigating circumstances;
N grades indicate unexplained nonsubmission;
SU grades do not indicate failure, merely that school placements were still in progress at the time of a Board of
Examiners.
Placement results for Primary teaching are marked on the following scheme: 1A = Excellent, 2B = Good, 3C = Pass, with
improvement required, 4 = Fail.
Credits have been awarded in accordance with the Higher Education Credit Framework for England. In order to convert
credits to the European ECTS Framework, the value should be divided by 2. For example: a 60 credit course listed above
equates to a 30-credit ECTS course.
