- 2. • Hebrews are the ancestors of modern day Jews. Hebrews lived in Canaan. • Founder of the Hebrew people was Abraham. • Abraham’s grandson was Jacob– had 12 sons who each established the 12 tribes of Israel.
- 3. Slavery • Hebrews traveled to Egypt escaping drought and famine • when Egyptians expelled the Hyksos in1200 BCE, the Egyptians enslaved the Hebrews for 400 years. • There was great suffering.
- 4. Bible • Moses led the Hebrews out of Egypt (Red Sea) • Exodus= escape, fled into the Sinai Peninsula • Wandered in the wilderness until they entered the “Promise Land”- Canaan
- 5. • Moses brings down the 10 commandments from Mt. Sinai – Moral law code that Yahweh revealed to Moses • Covenant- sacred agreement with Yahweh • Ark of the Covenant-container that held the 10 commandments
- 6. • 12 tribes unite under 1 King= Saul • David makes Jerusalem the capital and religious center • Solomon- increased wealth by trade with Arabia • Kingdom splits into 2- they are not strong enough to hold off invaders • Assyrians captured and enslaved the Hebrews
- 7. Yahweh • Monotheistic: Yahweh is the only god – Yahweh is a spiritual force, not a nature force – Ethics and proper conduct=ethical monotheism • Torah: 1st 5 books of the Old Testament • Hebrew Code of Law= Mosaic Law (Moses) – Values human life • All people deserve kindness and respect
