This document describes analyses performed on data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study to explore dimension reduction techniques. Principal component analysis and factor analysis were used. PCA yielded the most interpretable results, identifying three components explaining 22% of variance: Balance/Mobility, Household/Family Size, and Basic Care. Factor analysis with different extraction methods also identified three factors, though interpretations varied slightly with cross-loadings. Orthogonal and oblique rotations were compared.
