Dashboard Jumpstart Framework 5 Focus on outcomes and insights Define an initial set of critical questions that must be addressed and trace back from there to find the data that best helps provide insight. Generally, each chart or visualization should have a purpose – “what decision will you take based on the information displayed?” Assemble the right team A successful dashboard project generally requires a Database Developer, an Analyst and a Business SME. The Database Developer ensures that data is available in a manner that the analyst can access and manipulate it. The Analyst creates visualizations that provide non-obvious insights that are defined by the Business SME. Due diligence by doing! Many organizations get stuck in long analysis and evaluation phases that can be costly and delay the ability to learn by doing. Small, iterative initiatives that are “low-cost” provide much needed proof points for larger implementations.

- 8. Tableau Server – Enterprise Grade Solution 8 Licensing Costs Tableau Server licenses are based on named users of 10, 25, 50, 100 or larger starting at $10,000 and a 25% annual maintenance fee. This is a fixed cost and a traditional licensing model. AWS and Tableau recently launched a “consumption” based licensing model where you can pay for the software by the hour. For example a 10 user Tableau Server license costs $0.63 per hour or $5,500 annually. The hourly licensing model provides great flexibility especially for organizations that are starting on their data visualization journey and want to execute a limited time “experiment”. Hosting Costs In addition to the licensing costs, when hosting the Tableau Server, costs for servers, network and storage need to be accounted for. AWS provides many resources for helping users get started. A new way to buy and explore enterprise software is to use the AWS Marketplace.
