How did you attract and address
your audience?
Lareesa Warner
To begin, I will have to compare a professional magazine against my magazine which has a
similar target audience. I will have to see what's similar and different in both magazines. NME
has a very similar targeted audience, therefore I need to use NME magazine to help with
creating my magazine.
Professional Magazine My Magazine
Front cover
In terms of fonts, NME has a very clear block font
for the title, this allows everyone to be able to
read it clearly and understandable. I decided to go
against this and make my masthead took more
creative which allows my masthead different and
unique from others which relates to the genre of
the magazine. NMEs sell lines are also very
blocked and I decided to make my sell lines also
like this so the readers can understand them clearly and know what included in the
magazine. The colours used in both magazines are similar because I wanted to use binary
opposite colours with would allow them to work well together and stand out. I found out
from my initial research that red, yellow, blue with black and white does this very well and
NME also uses these colours for the same reason. All these features and things appeal to my
target audience due to the similarities with NMEs target audience. NME is a very successful
music magazine and is a big part of alternative music, therefore I know the audience will find
these elements appealing, whether this is due to their personal taste or due to reputation
and popularity of NME magazine. People aged 18-25 in particular are very much affected by
others opinions, and are likely to stray away from what they know is socially accepted, so
keeping my products in line with popular magazines like NME is undoubtedly going to appeal
to my targeted audience.
In terms of images, indie/alternative bands and artists are stereotypically know for their
moody attitudes. I wanted to keep my images in line with this as it is a well recognised trait
of the genre, as this is important for the targeted audience therefore they can recognise
which type of magazine it is. I decided to change some of the traditional conventions of a
bands photo, to make mine more unique which will appeal to my targeted audience as they
are indie and they always want to stand out from everyone else. Usually in a band there are
more males than females as they are usually classed as more dominate, therefore I decided
to reverse this and add more females than males, so the females feel as important as the
males. Also I decided to mix the race of the band therefore this would allow my magazine to
gain a larger audience as no races feel discriminated against my magazine.
Contents Page
Whilst doing my initial research of existing
music magazine, I found out that NME is one
of my favourite contents page layouts,
because it is different from a lot of the content
pages in other music magazines. I liked how
the main article image is in the centre of the
page and it is the largest image, this allows the
readers to know which article is going to be
the main one. This is a unique feature of the
contents pageand because indies are individuals allows them to relate to this because it is different. I also
like how there is a subscription box that allows the month reads to subscribe to the magazine
and get more for their money. I arranged my magazine in a similar way, however my
magazine is still unique even though I benefitted from NME by creating my contents page
similar to the NMEs contents page. I also added some of my own features that I found out
from my research. I added a competition which allows my readers to win something which
could also persuade more buyers. I also added a Facebook, Twitter and website link which
allows the readers to keep up with the magazine online. Finally I added a celebrities opinion
of my magazine because if readers see that the a well known celeb reads my magazine then
they may want to read my magazine.
Double page spread
I found out from my initial research that is useful to
have a montage of images rather than having one
image, to allow the images to tell a story without
using the article. I decided to choose my models
who are around 17 years old ask this is who I want
the main target audience to be because I want my
readers to be able to relate to my models. A lot of
music magazines double page spread an image
dominates one full page, however I didn’t want to
do this because I feel like putting the images at the
top of the page creates a better layout as your eye
automatically reads from top to bottom, therefore
the readers will see the images before the text.
Also I included two separate minor articles on
either side of the main article to make the double
page spread look more professional as then this
splits up the double page spread and makes it look
like NMEs magazines double page spread.
Changes made from my rough cut
Ruff cut Final
After getting feedback from my peers I found out that I didn’t have a lot changes to make
to my front cover. I had to move the date and price because it covered the male models
face and this didn’t look professional. I also had to move the sell like from one side of the
cover to the other side, and also change the colour because this wasn’t very visible as it
could be. I changed the colour to red because then this is more visible to the background
colours. Also I had to move the main sell line ‘boys like girls’ and the other sell line up to
make them more visible. I also I moved the bottom all stars sell line up to make this more
visible. I made these changes to make my magazine look more professional.
Ruff cut Final
Again I didn’t have many
changes to make to my
contents page. I had to change
the size of the subscription
box to make it look more full. I
also had to make the twitter
and Facebook logos smaller
and add a website in because
this would allow readers to
keep in touch with the
magazine. I then had to move
the ‘more from’ list up to fit
more onto my contents page to make it look more full because if the contents look full then
the readers will think that the whole magazine is full with information. I added a celebs
opinion of my magazine because if the readers see that a celeb likes my magazine then they
may buy it because they may think they’ll like it too. I also added a competition to persuade
more people to buy it because they think they’ll get something back from their money. My
final major changes was to change the page numbers and add a page number at the bottom
because it only looked like there was 8 pages, which wasn’t a good look for my magazine but
now it looks more professional.
Ruff cut Final
I had a more changes to make to the double page spread than the other pages of my magazine.
The main thing I had to fill the gap at the end of my article. I fill this in by adding a direct quote
from the article, this makes it look more professional. I also had to move all the text down it
wasn’t as visible as it could have been. I also had to add a title onto this page to make it look
more professional and also make the readers know who the band is if they don’t recognise
them in the photos. Finally I had to add the page numbers on to the bottom of the pages to
make the double page spread look more professional and so the readers can navigate through
the magazine easily.
Final audience feedbackI then posted my magazine onto Facebook and Twitter and got some feedback, it was food to
find out that the majority of the feed back was positive and very little I need to work on.
