Directors use light and dark situations to create a sense of emotion on
the character. They may do this by keeping half of the characters face
in the shade, this would create a sense of mystery and make the
audience feel conspicuous towards that character.

                                                 In the Body of lies,
                                                 The director uses light
                                                 and dark extremely
                                                 well to keep certain
                                                 messages hidden and
                                                 make the audience
                                                 feel a connection to
                                                 them in that they will
                                                 be part of the action
                                                 later in the film. In
                                                 one of the Early
                                                 scenes of body of lies
the man we see is him
covered one side by the shade this tells us he has something to hide
from the audience. This suggests that he is committing evil things or
part of them. But a contrast to this he is wearing white turban which
suggests he is good and that he has no connotations of evil. This is a
very valid
point
because
there are two
sides to it
because it is
based on
religion and
peoples
beliefs. In
the eyes of
an English
viewer or non-islamic believer they would see this islamic activist as a
bad person out to harm countries with other views. But on the other
side the islamic man will see himself as doing whats right and putting
right what happened before. He wears white to show peace and his
want to do good for his country. This causes a lot of talk about the
film and gives it a meaning and reference to everyday things.

Also in this same scene there is not much light around him which
doesn't give away any details about him, this adds mystery and
suspense to the scene; putting even more doubt into the audiences
mind giving them even more reason to instantly dislike him. There is
light coming in from the window behind him which shows he is
influenced by good in his actions but may not go about it the same
way.

Over all when using light and dark to depict emotional landscape from
a character there are many different ways to do this and the different
ways add different effects to the scene and give across different
messages. The location also adds a big effect to, it gives details of
what kind of ethnic background they are from and if they are poor or
rich, this could be from a simple exterior shot panning around a
character. All of these things add to the emotion given off and make
the audience think different things towards individual characters.

How does light and dark

  • 1. Directors use light and dark situations to create a sense of emotion on the character. They may do this by keeping half of the characters face in the shade, this would create a sense of mystery and make the audience feel conspicuous towards that character. In the Body of lies, The director uses light and dark extremely well to keep certain messages hidden and make the audience feel a connection to them in that they will be part of the action later in the film. In one of the Early scenes of body of lies the man we see is him covered one side by the shade this tells us he has something to hide from the audience.
