How does your media product represent particular social groups?
A social group is a section of people that can be defined by their age, gender, social class or even
religion. When looking at social groups to highlight a group of people, you can use certain features
to meet their expectations.
The target audience of XOYO magazine would be in the 16 – 25 age demographic. This is because
within this age group of people, they mostly listen to new and upcoming music. With examples such
as MixMag and NME, it is clear that my target audience are willing to listen to experimental music
therefore will take an interest in the content of my magazine. XOYO will feature articles about fresh
music from the electronic underground therefore appeal to people who want to discover new music.
Also as I am targeting this age group, the way I have writtenwill relate and be understandable to
them. This informal style of writing appeals to my target audience as it makes it easier to read
whereas some people may not fully intake the information from a more formal magazine such
UNCUT.
XOYO is mainly focused at males within this age group. This is because of the house style I have
used. It appeals more to males as the block lettering is more masculine with deeper colours. Also the
content may seem more interesting to a male. This is because they are stereotypically more involved
with this genre, only very few famous female DJs make their way into magazines. The main article on
‘MSTR BATE’ shows that he is male, the picture on the front cover states that he is dominant due to
the way he is posing in the picture. As he has his hands over the speakers and is almost looking down
on the audience it makes him seem superior. However I have added a feature on a female DJ in
order to appeal to this part of the demographic. Females will recognize that this is not just a males
magazine but also enjoyable for them too. Linking to both of the genders is my feature on festivals.
Both women and men go to festivals therefore they can relate to this feature. Women always need a
list of what to take with them and men never know what to bring therefore it caters to the needs of
both genders. The background image is neither male nor female; the cosmic feel I have tried to
create gives the magazine its own personality. It represents the experimental side to the music
featured and alternative styles that it holds.
My magazine appeals to most social classes. This is because from my own experiences, I know that
people from all walks of life listen to these genres of music. In this modern age, anyone can become
a music producer. This prosumer way of thinking causes more and more people to want to get
involved with music production. As a result of this, my target audience social class can vary as it will
appeal to both listeners of the music and also creators. Stereotypically electronic underground music
would be associated with working class people, the origins and roots sprout from a working class
background however with modern day technology people from all backgrounds can become
involved. The style of my magazine is very informal therefor middle and working class people will
understand the personality of the magazine.
