Background information/ QuestionsWhat I know and don’t know.Photosynthesis! What is light?
What are plant’s needs?
How do I record it?
What light color is best for plants?
What is color?
What makes one color different from another?
What plants should I use?
Plants need light to perform photosynthesis, which is making their own food.
Pansies can survive cold climates
Pansies need full to partial sun
Ultraviolet light has the greatest wavelength.
Light travels in waves measured by nanometers, which are one billionth of a meter.Procedure...I will use pansies because they’re hardy, easy to measure plants.I will measure the growth by height, in inchesThey’ll be planted in two cups soil, kept at the same temperature and be watered with one cup water and two tablespoons Miracle Grow. After one week they’ll be transferred under their different lights (three each type): sunlight, normal or white artificial light, artificial red light, and artificial blue light. The pansies under sunlight will be the control. I will stop recording their growth after four weeks.

  • 14. HypothesisWhat I think will happenI think that the pansies under sunlight will do best because:Sunlight is the most natural form of lightSunlight has the full spectrum of light, or all the colorsSunlight has the greatest frequency of light, (475 nm) which I believe makes brighter, warmer and generally better for the plant. I think the pansy under sunlight will grow at least an inch. After that the pansy under normal/ white artificial light will grow second best because it is most like sunlight and has the same frequency. Then the pansy under blue light will grow third best because it has the next greatest frequency, (465 nm) The plant under red light I think will do the worst because red has the lowest frequency, (650 nm)
  • 15. At first...Original Status. Graph 1.Pansy 1, (trial 1), under sunlight is exactly four inches tall. Pansy 2 is three and fourteen sixteenths inches tall and Pansy 3 is four and two sixteenths inches tall.
  • 16. Pansy 1 under normal, (or white) artificial light is exactly four and two sixteenths inches tall. Pansy 2 is four and one sixteenth as is Pansy 3.
  • 17. Pansy 1 under artificial red light is exactly three and fifteen sixteenths tall. Pansy 2 is four inches tall and Pansy 3 is three and fourteen sixteenths inches tall.
  • 18. Pansy 1 under artificial blue light is exactly four and one-sixteenths tall. Pansy 2 is exactly four and two sixteenths inches tall. Pansy 3is exactly four and three sixteenths inches tall. The Pansies Week 1Under different types of lights. Graph 2.Pansy 1 under artificial red light grew one sixteenth of an inch. The normal artificial light dropped a full inch dying already. The artificial blue light grew two sixteenths of an inch. The pansy in the sunlight grew two sixteenths of an inch as well.
  • 19. The Pansies Week 2Under different types of lights. Graph 3.The pansy under normal artificial light is stayed the same. The pansy under red light has dropped three-quarters or twelve-sixteenths of an inch dying as well. The pansy under blue light is surviving only dropping three-sixteenths of an inch staying green. The pansy under sunlight is doing the best only dropping a sixteenth of an inch.
  • 20. The Pansies Week 3Under different lights. Graph 4.Pansy 1 under sunlight grew 1/16th of an inch. Pansy 2 grew 3/16th’s of an inch. Pansy 3 grew 3/16th’s of an inch as well.
  • 21. Pansy 1 under artificial white light grew an entire ¼ of an inch. Pansy 2 grew 3/16th’s of an inch. Pansy 3 grew 1/16th.
  • 22. Pansy 1 under artificial blue light grew 2/16th’s as did pansy 3. Pansy 2 grew 1/16.
  • 23. Pansy 1 under artificial red light grew 1/16 as did 2 & 3.The Pansies Week 4Under different lights. Graph 5Pansy 1 under Sunlight grew 3/16th’s. Pansy 2 grew 3/16th’s. Pansy three grew 2/16th’s.
  • 24. Pansy 1 under artificial white light grew ¼ of an inch. Pansy 2 & 3 grew 2/16th’s.
  • 25. Pansy 1 under artificial blue light grew 1/16th , Pansy 2 didn’t grow. Pansy three grew 2/16th’s.
  • 26. Pansy 1 under artificial red light grew 3/16th’s. pansy 2 grew ¼. Pansy 3 didn’t grow.The ResultsGraph 5.
  • 27. AnalysisWhat the data points to.The artificial white light Pansies grew an average growth of .5416666667 inches or roughly ½ of an inch which is huge, (comparatively). So artificial white light won.
  • 28. The 2nd place Sunlight Pansies had an average growth of .33333333333333 inches or 6/16th’s from the beginning to the last measurement.
  • 29. The Blues came in 3rd at an average growth of 2.33333333/16th’s of an inch.
  • 30. Red’s in 4th at an average of -4166666667/16ths of an inch or -1/4 inch.
  • 31. The difference in growth of 1st & 4th was ¾ of an inch which is not quite as long as from your index finger’s knuckle to its first joint.ConclusionAlmost done. Phew!I was wrong in thinking that Sunlit Pansies would do best. Blue lit Pansies did best then Sunlight.
  • 32. White artificial light is best for indoor plants, at least in the winter.
  • 33. Red artificial light is the worst light for Pansies.
  • 34. This could be useful for those that have indoor plants and want to improve their growth.
  • 35. I learned that plain or white artificial light is best for Pansies.
  • 36. I learned that wavelength does affect plant growth and that sunlight has the smallest, (which is good) and that red has the largest, (bad)...(for plants).CreditsOr BibliographyLight & Sound by Chris Oxlade
