How Readest Thou
Text: Luke 10:26
Luke 10:26
26) He said unto him, What is written in the
law? how readest thou?
Intro: Mat 22:40; Mrk 12:30-31; Luke 10:37
Matt 22:40
On these two commandments hang all the
law and the prophets.
What are the two commandments and
where are they in the Old Testament?
Mark 12:30-31
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God
with all thy heart, and with all thy soul,
and with all thy mind, and with all thy
strength: this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this,
Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
There is none other commandment greater
than these.
Luke 10:37
And he said, He that shewed mercy on him.
Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou
likewise.
Upright vs the Villain- Luke 10:3
Luke 10:3
Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as
lambs among wolves.
A wolf confronts the Lamb Luke 10:25
Luke 10:25
And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and
tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to
inherit eternal life?
If he attempts to frighten the Lamb, that will put
his prey on the run.
Luke 10:25
And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and
tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to
inherit eternal life?
Matt 22:35-36
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer,
asked him a question, tempting him, and
saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in
the law?
“in the law” not in the 10 commandments, or in
Moses’ tables of stone.
Doctrinally this is dealing with a time when
obedience to the law and eternal life are
connected.
Rom 10:3-5
3 For they being ignorant of God's
righteousness, and going about to establish their
own righteousness, have not submitted
themselves unto the righteousness of God.
4 For Christ is the end of the law for
righteousness to every one that believeth.
5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which
is of the law, That the man which doeth those
things shall live by them.
Luke 10:27
And he answering said, Thou shalt love the
Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with
all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and
with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as
thyself.
Matt 22:37-39
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the
Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with
all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou
shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Matt 22:40
On these two commandments hang all the law
and the prophets.
Matt 7:12
Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that
men should do to you, do ye even so to them:
for this is the law and the prophets.
The big 10 (Ex 20)
1.No other gods 2.No graven
images
3.Not take the
name in vain
4.Remember the
Sabbath
5.Honor Father
and Mother
6.Not kill
7.Not adultery 8.Not steal
9.Not false witness 10. Not covet
Neither of the big two are in the big ten, maybe
these are just two old obscure rules that were
only known in Old Testament times. Let’s
investigate.
Rom 13:8-10
8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one
another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled
the law.
9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery,
Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal,
Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt
not covet; and if there be any other
commandment, it is briefly comprehended in
this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy
neighbour as thyself. 10 Love worketh no ill
to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling
of the law.
Gal 5:14
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in
this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Jas 2:8
If ye fulfil the royal law according to the
scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself, ye do well:
1John 4:21
And this commandment have we from him,
That he who loveth God love his brother also.
Matthew, Mark, Luke, Paul, James and John all
recognize this first and second commandment,
that is not found in the big ten.
As Jesus ask, so will I, “how readest thou”?
After reading the first five books of the Bible it
is expected that you will notice two
commandments as first and second, and these
two are not even found in the same chapters or
books of the Bible.
How readest thou? Mostly with a lack of
understanding.
Deut 6:5
And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all
thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all
thy might.
Lev 19:17
Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart:
thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour,
and not suffer sin upon him.
Josh 7:25
And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled
us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day.
And all Israel stoned him with stones, and
burned them with fire, after they had stoned
them with stones.
1Chr 2:7
And the sons of Carmi; Achar, the troubler
of Israel, who transgressed in the thing
accursed.
1Kgs 18:17-18
17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw
Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he
that troubleth Israel?
18 And he answered, I have not troubled
Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in
that ye have forsaken the commandments of
the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.
Lev 19:18
Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge
against the children of thy people,
but
thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am
the LORD.
Conclusion
Rom 8:1-5
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to
them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not
after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus
hath made me free from the law of sin and
death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was
weak through the flesh, God sending his own
Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin,
condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be
fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but
after the Spirit.
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the
things of the flesh; but they that are after the
Spirit the things of the Spirit.
How readest Thou?
We should read with a mind to mind the Spirit.
John 6:63
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth
nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they
are spirit, and they are life.
John 16:13
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come,
he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not
speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear,
that shall he speak: and he will shew you things
to come.
