This document summarizes a model of how reputation affects bidder behavior on the online auction site eBay. The model predicts that bidders are more likely to participate in auctions and place higher bids when sellers have even a small number of positive reputation reports. However, the returns to additional positive reports beyond the first few are predicted to be small, as bidders are largely convinced of a seller's honesty after an initial reputation is established. Empirical analysis of golf club auctions on eBay supports these predictions, finding that a seller's reputation has a substantial impact on bidder participation and bid amounts, but that marginal returns diminish quickly with additional positive reports.
