How the Internet is
Revolutionizing Education
made by Sveta Krasnova
The Beginning
April, 2001 – Charles M. Vest (the MIT
President at the time) made the materials
of the university available on the Internet
April, 2006 – complete academic courses,
lectures were available online
The Reasons
1) access to materials for students
2) cultivating a great affinity for a public
university
3) opportunity to provide educational
resources all over the world
«The Web has unlocked the keys to a
worldwide virtual school, potentially
leveling the playing field for students
around the world»

Opportunities

and educational media in

institutional walls and gives learners

(the founders are Philipp Schmidt, Delia
Browne, Stian Haklev, Neeru Paharia,
Joel Thierstein)
Skillshare
A community market place that
enables users to learn anything from
anywhere
Scitable

peer-reviewed on library built on top of
it; it is dedicated to encouraging
students to take part in science
education and science in general
Skype’s Role
Skype in the Classroom
One of the first forays into the
education sphere. It was created to
help like-minded teachers collaborate
on projects and share resources
Teach the World Online
Using Skype to give students access to
English teachers (used in Haiti and
Cambodia)
The News Literacy Program
Using Skype so journalists can give
guest lectures to students all over the
world on how to sort fact from fiction in
the digital age
The list of 10 open educational resources and OCW
resources by Andrey Watters (a tech reporter)
includes:
P2PU

OpenStudy
OER Glue
iUniv

Whether the Internet can really
replace higher education or not still
remains a question
Dr. Colman(editor of Open Culture)
says:
