It’s8:56pm on a Tuesday.You have a [insertBigDeal here] due intwohours.BigDeal was
assignedtoyoutwo weeksago,maybe eventwomonthsago.Heck,forthe sake of things,let’ssaythat
youknewaboutBig Deal twowhole yearsago.But eventhoughyourentire livelihood reliesonBigDeal,
youletit slide,fall throughthe cracksof your bottomlesspitof excuses. Ihaveso much time. I have
Monday.It’snotdueuntilnext week.Justonedrink.Just onethink.Justone morelink. Andthen time
goesby andyou realize thatat the beautiful age of thirty-five,you’re adecade behindthe BigPicture
because a YouTube/Netflix/HuluPremium/AmazonPrime/OtherIrrelevantActivitymarathon onan
importantTuesdaynightwasmore importantthanthe Big Deal.
Why?
We all have a story. There isa beginning,middle,andanend.Inthat story,we are the hero,the
antagonist,the foil,andthe supportingcharacter.Sometimesoutsideforcescome atus to teardown
everythingthatwe love,loved,andhave builtup fromthe ground.Sometimeswe doittoourselves.
Procrastinationisjust anotherwaywe can do ourselvesin.It’sfairlyeasytolose sightof the BigPicture.
We getlostin the mundanenessof ourlives.We focusonthe small parts,the dailymishapsthatworkto
etchout our listof reasonsto quit,andrealize thatonce upona time,we had#goals.
Procrastinationiswhenyoulose sightof those #goals.Procrastinationiswhenyou bothdoand
don’tfocuson the nownessof the present.It’sthe immediacyof pseudocomfortthatcomeswiththe
ideathat there’salwaysgoingtobe a bettertime todo whatyou needtogetdone.
Newsflash:There’snevergoingtobe a bettertime.
Procrastinationisthe ideathatyoucan nevercompletethatBigDeal like you wantto. Your
perfectionistideologieswill allowyoutothinkthatif you can’t doit right,youshouldn’tdoitall.
Newsflash:You’ll neverknow unlessyoutry.
Procrastinationleadsyoutofall intoafreefallingphobiaof failure.You’re afraidyou’llscrewit
up. In reality,thisisthe worstkindof way to think.You’re settingyourself upforfailure.Sure,you’ll find
waysto convince yourself thatyouhave more time andthat bysimplywaitingyoucanwaituntil you’re
trulyreadyto face that demon.Butlet’sbe honest,whenhave thateverbeenthe case?

Procrastinationmight’veledyoutobelievethatyou’re God’sgifttotime management. Yougot
this.It’snot that you’re afraidof failing.No,thatcouldneverbe it.You’re confidentwithinyourability
to do better,be better.Infact,you’re fairlyconvincedthat thatBigDeal can be completedwithin thirty
minutes.It’sthateasy.Soyou’ll goout.You’ll doother things.You’ll pushitall aside. You’re beinglazy,
youhave no self-control,butit’sall okay. Witheverypassingday,you’llfall intoaloose feelingof
comfort,slowlyforgettingthatthatBig Deal isgettingcloserandcloserto becomingaBig Obstacle that
will messwithyourBigPicture.ThatBig Deal isgettingbiggerandbiggerandwhat could’ve beenan
easyassignmentmappedoutandbrokendownintosmall,manageable piecesisnow abehemothof a
beastthat seemsunapproachable.
