How to sew a soft cube
An easy, fun sewing project.
I used the same fabrics from the soft ball project, so
both ball and cube together make a beautiful set. I
recommend making the cube with few colors of
fabric, like in the soft ball project - this way it will be
colorful and fun.
If you have some time, you can make few of those
and on each one make an application of a number or
a letter - this will fit bigger kids who will be happy to
spell out words with cubes or to learn to count.
Things you will need:
• A 28*28 inch piece of fabric (about 70*70 cm) -
several colors preferable
• Needle and thread (even if you are using a sewing
machine)
• Acrylic or any other preferable filling
• Scissors
• Pins
• Sewing machine - optional but recommended
I suggest reading this guide completely before starting
the project.
Now that you have everything we can start:
Cut 6 squares of fabric, each square size should be 4*4
inch (10*10 cm). If you want your cube to be bigger -
you'll need more fabric than mentioned above. Make
sure the pieces are the same size - It is not critical on
the millimeter, but don't make one 4*4 and the other
4*5...
After you cut 6 squares, arrange them the way you want
them to be, in the sketch - same colors represent squares
that will be one in front of the other:
When you chose your positioning, you can pin all the
pieces together and sew them.
Don't forget! you'll need to leave one side a little open -
so you can turn the cube inside out and fill it.
Now that you have a cube that is open a little bit in one
side, you can turn it inside out and fill it with some acrylic
(or any other filling you'd like). The amount of the filling
you will put is going to make the difference on how hard
the cube will be. The more filling the harder. Try different
amount of filling before you close the cube.
When you've decided how much filling you want your
cube to have, you will have to stitch it by hand. You can
use the sewing machine, but then the stitches will be
seen. Sewing by hand will allow you to make hidden
stitches.
