Who is Martyn Cook?
• In 2017 I wrote a “book”
• Good but very short
• Tremendous effort to write
• Released it as a PDF
• Felt regret for an entire year!
Introduction
https://book.smarterdestiny.com
So I did something about it..
But I HATED Writing …
So I started researching …
And I found the solution!
• Thick but not TOO thick
• Large letter = 2.5cms
• Looked at similar size books
• Found that 300 pages was the sweet
spot
• Most books had about 50 chapters –
that also seemed about right!
Maths
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
• 300 Pages Total
• Minus 25 For Chapter heading pages
• Minus 25 Pages for Images etc
• Leaves 250 Pages of Writing
• Average of 300 Words Per Page
• Total = 75,000 Words
• Which is 1500 Words per Chapter
Maths
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
• I discovered that you can DICTATE your
entire book
• You can speak much faster than you
can write
• Approximately 150 words per minute
• So each chapter (1500)
• Can be dictated in just 10 minutes!
• ..and someone else can transcribe the
recording!
The Secret Sauce
• #1 You don’t need to type
• You don’t need a keyboard
• You only need your phone
• Talking is faster than typing
• You can talk whilst doing other things
• Thus you can potentially write your book
during otherwise “dead” time.
• (in my case) – Whilst walking my dog!
Why Dictate?
Meet Winston…
Planning
Your Book
• What topic are you an expert on?
• Expert = Just knowing at least a little bit more than others.
• Will your chosen topic add enough value to others that they will
pay money for it?
• Will your topic solve customer problems?
• Is there enough of a market to buy your book?
• Basically, niche selection – which I cover in this video here:
https://smarterdestiny.com/findniche
Planning your book…
• Note down your ideas for chapter topics
• Look at chapters in other books in your niche
• Search for blog articles in your niche
• Look on Youtube for videos in your niche
• Look at reviews on Amazon products in your niche
• Aim for 75+ ideas as you’ll filter some out later.
Chapter Ideas…
Sort your chapter ideas by theme
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
• Story that demonstrates talking points
• Actionable advice relating to the story that they
can apply to their business
• Recap about the story and advice
• Action points so they can cement the learning
in their mind
Chapter Structure
• Story about when I accidentally dyed a poodle
green.
• Advice about being careful about choosing
dyes and mixing them properly
• Recap about the story and advice
• Homework to research whether your preferred
dyes include ingredient X and if alternatives are
available.
Applied to Dog Haircut Book
• Story about when I accidentally dyed a poodle green.
• Day of the week, location and time
• How I was feeling – long shift etc
• Accidentally grabbed the wrong dye!
• The customer was so angry!
• Advice about being careful about choosing dyes and mixing
them properly
• Check the label
• Be careful of XYZ ingredient (because)
• Recap about the story and advice
• What are you thinking about when working?
• Avoid the angry customers by …
• Homework to research whether your preferred dyes include
ingredient X and if alternatives are available.
Fleshed Out:
Rev.com App
• Rev transcribes the recording to dropbox folder
• I shared the dropbox folder with my colleague
• She “wrote up” the transcription in Google Docs
• BONUS: She learnt all about Ecommerce marketing at the
same time!
Transcribed to Dropbox
• Finally she took the write ups and
loaded them into Scrivener
• Scrivener = Word Processor for Book
Writing
• Youtube is your friend here!
Graduated to Scrivener
• Create a simple lead capture for
• Tell as many people as you can that
your book is coming out
• Collect Name, Phone, Email
• I recommend Kartra as the funnel
builder (Link below)
Pre-Launch – Build Hype
https://smarterdestiny.com/funnelbuilder
• Foreword is optional (but recommended)
• Should be impressive and influencial
• Should be relevant to the topic
• Research people that match your criteria
• Make list of your dream 50 people
• Contact your dream 50 people
• I love linkedin for this!
• Or their website contact forms
• Stay focused, try to contact at least 10 people per
day
Foreword
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
• Message should be brief, complimentary and to
the point
• It’s an honour to be a foreword so it’s not as hard
as you think
• Each person will have different questions – so
answer as best as possible
• If you get multiple yes’s pick the best person for
the job.
Foreword (continued)
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
• Contact TRUSTED people asking if they would like a free copy of
your book in exchange for a review
• I recommend watermarking the PDF before sending, unique
watermark for each.. Or send a physical copy
• Make sure you follow up with each person to get either a testimonial
.. Or a ”No”
Testimonials
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
• Leverage your Foreword and Testimonials
• And your book structure, who you are, why you wrote
the book
• Again, I recommend Kartra for doing this –
https://smarterdestiny.com/funnelbuilder
• I have relevant upsells after the sales page to help
cover the cost of shipping books.
• I link Kartra to a Shopify store which I use as the
backend to my book funnel.
• Kartra also has an affiliate program
• Feel free to model my funnel here:
Selling Your Book
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
• If you’ve ever done a video/talk/screenshare you can
transcribe that into a chapter and include slides as
chapter images
• Download ”Book mockup” PSD (Photoshop) files and
all you need is the cover to create images of a
finished book!
• Email me at martyn@smarterdestiny.com if you want
more info and I’ll add more videos on this topic.
