Coach Carter by Jasmine Jones
As a student enters the gym doors of Smith Cotton they can see various trophies from our athletic
teams, along with our JROTC National Championship banners that hang up from the walls. One can
see by the quality of our gym that our sports are a main part of our school, but as one wonders on into
the hallways of our school, they can see how dull they are. By the plainness of the walls, there seems
to be no life, in the JROTC hallway you see the trophy cabinet full of multiple national trophies and as
you venture on you get to see images of what these teams do, along with the bulletin board that shows
newspaper articles of the success of the program. But as you continue to walk toward the other side of
the classroom, one can only see some bulletin boards that do not have many things on them except for
some advertising. Just by observing this, a new student can see that our school has a great deal to do
with sports, but what they cannot see is how well this school performs academically. As we walk
down the halls you rarely see a student s work displayed. So one can assume what James Coleman
thinks to be correct, that altogether, the trophy case would suggest to the innocent visitor that he was
entering an athletic club, not an educational institution. This is a dilemma among many schools that is
sometime not dealt with adequately. There are some films that only display the glory of being on a
team and winning championship titles; there are hardly ever any films that display

Essay The Rites of Spring by Modris Eksteins
Modris Eksteins presented a tour de force interpretation of the political, social and cultural climate of
the early twentieth century. His sources were not merely the more traditional sources of the historian:
political, military and economic accounts; rather, he drew from the rich, heady brew of art, music,
dance, literature and philosophy as well. Eksteins examined ways in which life influenced, imitated,
and even became art. Eksteins argues that life and art, as well as death, became so intermeshed as to
be indistinguishable from one another. The title of the book, The Rites of Spring, and the plunge into
the world of the Ballet Russe in the first chapter, made clear that Eksteins intended to use Stravinsky s
ballet as an image for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Germany was, relatively speaking, a new nation; new as a single nation. Russian contributions to
music and dance were new; they did not date back centuries like in England, France, Germany and
Italy. Politically, Germany found herself in a similar situation. She was new and wanted to make her
place among the great powers; she saw herself as the innovator, a progressive spirit, as opposed to
wearied France and conservative Britain. Eksteins contends that because Germans saw themselves as
the agent of (inevitable) progress, they felt their role in The Great War was defensive rather than
aggressive. To attack Germany was to attack the future. This belief that they must defend their
homeland from those who would deny the future, sustained the Germans during and after the war, and
into the next one. Eksteins realized that Hitler was not an anomaly; Hitler touched a sympathetic chord
within the Germans. Although Eksteins discussed that any group may want to find scapegoats when
things go wrong, citing the tendencies of the French to look beyond themselves for explanations of
failure, he implies that, in Germany, finding scapegoats produced such horrific results because
preexisting sentiments of anti Semitism combined with the violence and power of Nazism. His

The War And Its Effects On The Middle East And Europe
Introduction
The crisis in Syria is seemingly endless. There are two main forces in Syria. Syrian rebels against
President Bashar al Assad s regime abruptly emerged due to the discontent of the dictatorship and
demand for democracy, and the government forces has been tried to suppress the furious rebel in order
to maintain Assad s dictatorial regime. Because of the collision between two antagonists that seem to
never agree each other, people in Syrian are suffering from the devastating and nonselective bombing.
Approximately, 250,000 people have died from the conflict, and over 4.5 million Syrians have
migrated to different neighboring countries in Middle East and Europe (BBC News 2016). The civil
war has been gone for years and years; however, the devastating war and inhumane government attack
on people do not seem to be terminated. Because of the enlarging scale of the civil war, the global
society considered the severity as one of the international affairs, and the United Nations eventually
came up with a plan for resolution.
Despite the effort of the United Nations on a draft resolution for Syrian war crisis, passing the draft
resolution through was not easy, and it has not been passed yet. There were some countries who did
not agree to pass the draft resolution for Syrian civil war; the main countries who used veto power
were Russia and China, the permanent member of the UN. According to the resolution on the human
rights situation in the Syrian Arab Republic, the

Fear In The Tell-Tale Heart And The Masque Of Red Death
Fear is beneficial and dismissive
Fear is beneficial. Being cautious in the world is a survival skill and alerts you about your
surroundings. Fear is like a restraint holding you back from the temptation of irrational acts. Except
when the fears releases and lead to paranoia. Sometimes fear clouds the mind of rational thoughts
therefore, it that may or will become an obsession. In Edgar Allan Poe s The Tell Tale Heart , The Pit
and the Pendulum , and The Masque of Red Death , all of the main characters experience fear. Edgar
Allan Poe uses symbolism, irony, and imagery to illuminate how fear distorts the protagonist s mind
and resulting in such fear. The symbols in The Tell Tale Heart and The Masque of Red Death are the
items that the narrator obsesses over due to emotional excesses. An example would be the eye from
The Tell Tale Heart and how that it may be symbolism of his father s judgement. The judgement of the
father s eye haunted [ him ] day and night. (page 74). The eye haunted man with the symbolic of him

The Life Of A Woman, By Jamaica Kincaid
Lucy, the eponymous character of Jamaica Kincaid s second novel, moves from Antigua to New York
not in an arbitrary move, but in a calculated effort to explore her latent queer sexuality and gradually
escape the gendered labor of her homeland. By working as an au pair for an upper class white woman
named Mariah, Lucy trades birthing labor for domestic labor in a move that initially seems lateral, but
serves as a potential gateway to freedom from caretaking that would have been inaccessible in
Antigua. Unbridled from her mother, the American Lucy has opportunities to explore her sexuality
without being deemed promiscuous, and has the ability to live with a woman she can have intimate
relations with. Lucy has continuously disobeyed the performative prescriptions of heteronormativity
in her life, but, as explained by the work of Rosamund King, her transgressions in Antigua are
rendered invisible by a culture that believes women are incapable of sexual agency. America
acknowledges Lucy s transgressions against heteronormativity, which lets her explore sexuality and
gradually escape the obligations of gendered work. Lucy is escaping the obligations delineated by
female performance. Lucy does not begin to experiment or play with queerness and gender in
America, but remains unassimilated to beauty standards with the same intensity she had in Antigua.
During her upbringing, her gender nonconforming behaviors and ideology went ignored in Antigua
because of the common misconception that females are incapable of having sexual agency,
intelligence, or usefulness beyond sustenence work and caretaking within the household (King). Lucy
is allowed to kiss girls, like her best friend from school, and her does not fret over failing to enjoy acts
of intimacy with males. Heteronormativity is not enforced by expectations of female and male
pairings, but instead by the gendered division of labor. According to Nancy Hartsock s Feminist
Standpoint, this tradition of forcing females into sustenance work should create a collective caregiver
essence to women, and Lucy proves the antithesis. Akash Nichols, in his essay Straight Growth and
the Imperial Alternative: Queer Reading Jamaica Kincaid, delves into how 20th century and, as

What Is Howard Gardner Theory Of Multiple Intelligence

Russell Gash
Thongsook College, Bangkok
Extract
This paper will outline the Howard Garners theory of multiple intelligences. It will examine how he
came to his conclusion and how we can use of his theory in a second language classroom. It will
examine the criticisms from the scientific community on Gardner s theory and opinion from the author
with regard to applying Gardner s principles within a classroom.
Keywords: multiple intelligences, theories, psychological testing.
Intelligence It s Not Just IQ
In 1993 Howard Gardner unveiled his theories on multiple intelligences (MI) in his book Frames of
the Mind: The theory of Multiple Intelligence . Gardner claims that everyone is different, we all have
individual strengths and weaknesses and he suggests these to be multiple intelligences. In the book he
sets out to answer the question Is intelligence a single thing or various independent intellectual
faculties? (Gilman, 2013). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(White, 2005, P.1). In a later book, Gardner combines both the inter and intra personal intelligences,
adds a new intelligence, naturalistic, the ability to identify and classify the components that make up

see the bigger picture in life or a concern with ultimate

Democracy in Lord of the Flies
Lord of the Flies Essay
A range of two leadership styles are depicted in William Golding s novel, Lord of the Flies, with
Ralph representing a democratic leader, while Jack exemplifies a dictator. While on the island, the
boys have a choice of following either Ralph, the more sensitive leader who cares about the others, or
Jack, the more harsh leader who puts himself before the other boys and strives for power over the
others.
Ralph uses more of a democratic method. He allows others to contribute ideas. In the beginning of the
novel when the boys first discuss who should become the leader, Ralph brings forth the idea of voting,

Edward Taylor And Anne Bradstreet
Throughout this class we have read different types of literature from many different authors. Some of
the material I truly enjoyed and some of it not so much. I really enjoyed the Native American literature
that we started out with in the beginning of the semester. I think the Native Americans are beautiful
people who appreciated the land more than most. The Native Americans were smart people who used
short stories such as The Chief s Daughters and Coyote and Bear to warn their readers of dangers or
teach them moral lessons. I also enjoyed authors such as Edward Taylor, Anne Bradstreet, and Thomas
Paine. I did not like reading William Byrd s material, chiefly because he was rude and spoke nastily of
the Native Americans. It personally offended me that he thought their belief of afterlife to be gross and
sensual .
I have read material from many different authors and although I enjoyed most of them, I have to say
that my two favorites were Edward Taylor and Anne Bradstreet. Both of these authors are Puritans,
and it is easy to tell when reading their pieces. Puritans typically write in simple language, and always
refer to God. Edward Taylor created a powerful analogy in his piece, Upon a Spider Catching a Fly.
The analogy that he describes is an analogy between people and Satan. The spider represents the devil,
who is manipulative and wants to trap people in his web of sin. The wasp represents someone who is
strong in their faith and does not let themselves get trapped in

Wait Till Next Year Summary Essays
Wait Till Next Year, by Doris Kearns Goodwin, is a personal memoire of Goodwin s life growing up
in Rockville Centre, New York during the 1950s. Goodwin talks about multiple members of her
family, including her father, Michael, her mother, Helen, her two sisters, Charlotte and Jeanne, and her
best friend while growing up, Eileen. The memoire includes many memories of how she and her
family were affected during the atomic bomb and McCarthyism. Also in her story, she highlights the
good and bad things about growing up as a suburban child. Goodwin has great memories about her
neighborhood. She had many memories of her school, church, and time spent with her favorite team,

Many of the people in the community liked the Dodgers as well, but there were some who liked teams
from the Yankees to the Giants. Even though there were different team choices throughout the
community, baseball was a thing everyone enjoyed. Goodwin remembers most where the events
within the community with the people she was surrounded by. Goodwin s memories of the 1950s were
very positive, however the family life made growing up somewhat negative. During most of Goodwin
s life, her mother suffered from different illnesses that would cause problems in the household. Most
of the time, her mother, Helen, was too sick to have company over, which was very stereotypical
during that time. When television came around, the family would host gatherings. When Helen was
asked if she could have more gatherings Helen would reply, but I simply can t do it. Even now, I am
so exhausted just from having everyone here that I ve got to lie down for a little while (Goodwin 122).
Goodwin s sister, Jeanne, took many roles that Helen could not because Helen was so sick. Goodwin
stated that, For as long as I can remember, she was a surrogate mother, looking out for me, taking care
of me when my mother was sick (Goodwin 37). Goodwin would recall many stories of Jeanne doing
tasks that their mother would do. This made her Goodwin feel embarrassed, which is where the

The Old Testament of the Holy Bible gives many examples which provide modern man with
guidelines for the use of scientific method. Millam (2008) explains that there is an underlying order in
nature demonstrated by the patterns and regularities of God s creations. These regularities can be seen
in the forces of nature and are stable throughout space and time (Millam, 2008). The original
classification of species, use of precise measurement, and even the first account of scientific research,
are all included in the Old Testament of the Holy Scriptures. God gives scientists some clear frames of
reference for seeking knowledge and truth in science.

It was not made to sail, but to float until the water went down and the angel of the Lord opened the
only door of the Ark (Cremades, 2000). Noah, being a righteous and faithful man, was obedient to
God s divine direction in the building of the Ark. Noah also trusted that God would keep His covenant
with him that if Noah built the Ark and loaded it with the animals and food according to God s explicit
instructions that God would keep them all safe through the flood and cause His angel to open the door
of the Ark when the flood waters had receded. The Biblical lesson for the modern man of science is
that God has called us to obediently follow His teachings in all of our scientific endeavors His
precision in measures and His integrity and truth in reporting results yet with the humility of fallen
creatures who are prone to sin and error.

Moses energy from morning to evening. Jethro had conceived of a better system for handling disputes
among the Israelites, and outlined the details to Moses. Upon considering Jethro s idea, (Moses) chose

Mental Rotation of Images
Abstract The idea of mental imagery has always been a controversial subject in the field of
psychology. Many psychologists have argued that such a concept is impossible to measure because it
can not be directly observed. Though they are right about this, it is not impossible to measure how
quickly mental rotations of images are processed in our brains. Subjects in this experiment were
presented two shapes simultaneously, via computer screen, and asked to make judgement, as quickly
as possible, as to whether the two shapes presented were the same or mirror images. Two different
shapes were used in this experiment, each given as often as the other. During each trial one shape

Overall, when comparing the reaction times of pictures to letters, picture reaction times are said to be
generally greater. In conducting this experiment 20 right handed subjects were used, 10 male and 10
female. Subjects participated in this study either to earn course credit, or for payment of ten dollars per
hour. Three things were concluded from this experiment. First, picture rotations took longer to
perform than letter rotations. Second, there were no sex differences in reaction times for either
stimulus presented, and third, there was a linear increase in reaction times as angular disparity of both
stimuli sets increased (Desrocher, smith Taylor, 1995). As predicted this study did replicate some
previous findings. However, based on the data from this experiment sex differences did not yield a
significant difference in reaction times when presented with the different stimuli. Concurrent with our
data, both of the previously mentioned experiments concluded the same thing; reaction times
increased as angular disparity increased. Although the objectives in each experiment were somewhat
different, there has been a sufficient amount of evidence to support the hypothesis, that reaction times
will increase as the angular disparity of objects increase. Method Participants Ten St. Johns University
undergraduate students participated in this experiment to fulfill their Research Method

The Cognitive Development Of Children
There are many different things that shape the cognitive development of children. To begin with
cognitive development is when a child develops how to process, solve problems, and start making
decisions. Once they have learned this they take everything they have learned into their adolescence.
An example, of what can shape the cognitive development of a child can be an educational game.
Educational games can be very useful in shaping a child s development because they are having fun
while learning at the same time and what kid doesn t like to play games, the fact that it is even
educational makes it even better for them. Not only are they having fun but there are many different

how digital tools are and have become an important tool when it comes to children s learning and
development. They mention Vygotsky s theory, on how cognitive development happens with the use
of computers because it is a tool that is part of our culture. These tools are important because it helps
the children develop many different skills (Tran and Subrahmanyam, 2013). They mention different
pathways that help toward cognitive development. The first pathway is the amount of time that they
spend using the computers. Children shouldn t spend a long time using the computers they should
limit their use of computers for a certain amount of time per day. They mention how kids that come
from a low income family and struggle with reading get many beneficial in learning from using the
computers. It enhances their school readiness. The second pathway is the way kids interpret the
language of the computer. For example, how to navigate a computer. Tran and Subrahmanyam

Preventing Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections in Older Adults: Improving Health Outcomes

Through medical advances in technology and practice, nurses have been afforded the opportunity to

First, neurological disorders can occur, as seen with Alzheimer s disease and Parkinson s disease,
which can lead to neurogenic bladder ( Neurology/Neurogenic Bladder, 2017). Next, physiological
disorders can occur as seen with enlarged prostate in men or shortening of the urethra in women
(Jaipaul, 2017). Anticipating the above changes appropriately will aid in understanding what leads to
urinary retention in older adults, the resulting need of catheterizations, and the CAUTIs that can
follow. Having a foundation to build on, it would be beneficial to explore what nurses can do prevent
urinary tract infections in patients who require catheterization.
Current Nursing Care
The first step nurses can take to decrease the incidents of CAUTIs in older adults is avoiding
unnecessary use of catheters altogether. Initially, this begins with nurses knowing both appropriate and
inappropriate situations in which a catheter should be utilized. According to (Gould et al., 2017), an
appropriate situation is one where a patient has acute urinary retention or bladder obstruction, whereas
an inappropriate situation is one where a catheter is being used a means of obtaining urine for culture
when the patient can voluntarily void. Nurses can also use basic techniques like palpation, percussion,
and inspection to effectively assess urinary retention, which is the main reason for catheterization as
mentioned earlier. When techniques like this do not achieve desired results,

Henry Thoreau Meaning
In Henry Thoreau s essay Walking , he says: Sometimes, no doubt, we find it difficult to choose our
direction, because it does not yet exist distinctly in our idea. Thoreau refers to the difficulty of
choosing the direction of a walk, emphasizing that there is a right way but that we often choose the
wrong. Indeed, he gives a thorough explanation of using one s conscience by choosing between right
and wrong. I, for one can relate to this beautiful quote that Henry Thoreau writes. I can relate to this
by my own identity. Sometimes I choose to put on this certain mask because of my insecurity how
others feel about me. As I approached my first year of high school in 2010, I realized from that day
my identity was lost and did not feel I was going towards the right direction. I always put on these
different masks on how I identified myself. However, after discovering my deeper relationship with
the Lord in 2014, everything changed quickly for me in a positive result. Thoreau s quote points out
two main things in my life. With assistance from the Lord, family, and friends, I was able to overcome
those feelings of fear and insecurity by discovering my vocation and my ability to grow in holiness.
As a young and naĂŻve teenager going into high school was a struggling experience. I did not know
what to think of it, nor did not know how to react to this new chapter that was begun in my life. I

Tendinitis Research Paper
Injury, repetitive movement, aging, or disease can result in tendinitis. Tendinitis is when tendons,
which are thick cords that join your muscles to your bones, become irritated or inflamed. This can
cause acute pain and tenderness, which makes it difficult to move the affected joint. This makes daily
tasks and activities more uncomfortable and strenuous. You are more likely to develop this condition
in your shoulder, elbow, heel or wrist. Tendinitis is also known as swimmer s shoulder, jumper s knee,
pitcher s shoulder, and golf or tennis elbow.
Tendinitis can affect people of any age. Unfortunately, it is more common among adults who are more
active or athletic. If you play baseball, basketball, bowl, golf, or play tennis, then you are more
susceptible to tendinitis as well. Elderly individuals are also more susceptible to tendinitis. This is

The purpose of the National Security Association, sometimes referred to as the NSA, is to protect
citizens from terrorist attacks on our country. The NSA has succeeded because they can invade our

The Nile River was a great contributing factor in the development of early Egypt. It is the country s
longest running river, and runs right through Egypt.
The location of the river added convenience, which aided agricultural abilities helping to boost
civilization. Farmers used the water for irrigation since most of Egypt is dry. During the long rainy
season, the Nile would flood. When the flood occurred it would drop deposits of silt, a rich soil ideal
for growing crops. The farmers would then spend long, laborious hours cultivating and preparing the
land for planting. They also spent time making dikes and ditches to retain the water for irrigation uses

People came to California with gold fever from all across the country and even Mexico. Word spread

This notion is the core of James MacGregor Burns classic definition of leadership as leaders inducing
followers to act for certain goals that represent the values and the motivations the wants and needs, the
aspirations and expectations of both leaders and followers. Successful leadership inspires the members
of the organization to embrace shared values and to move together toward shared objectives.4 Rowing
a boat is sometimes offered as the metaphor: if several individuals try to row a boat while out of sync
and with each attempting to steer in a different direction, much energy will be expended with little
progress made. A successful leader (in the metaphor, the coxswain), however, inspires the rowers to
stroke in sync in support of a common direction, which will cause the boat to go farther and faster
toward the desired destination.

The DSM-5 Diagnostic Analysis
While the DSM 5 remains largely based on categorical nosology, the introduction acknowledges the
need for a more dimensional approach (APA, 2013). In fact, the DSM 5 task force and work groups
were instructed to consider empirically based guidelines to improve dimensional aspects of disorder
categorization such as: shared neural substrates, biomarkers, family traits, course of illness, high
comorbidity, genetic risk factors, and shared treatment response. While the DSM 5 task force
ultimately decided that it was scientifically premature to transition to a completely dimensional
diagnostic system that would have in effect changed the requirements for most disorders, the current
edition serves as a transitional guideline to new diagnostic approaches without dramatically disrupting
current clinical practice/research (APA, 2013). Dimensional approaches can be observed throughout
the DSM 5 through the consolidation of related disorders, Section III additions, and supplemental
online materials. Consolidation of Disorders. The DSM 5 contains reorganized, consolidated, and

and the beginning of the war that would declare independence for the future United States. Elements
of this chapter like the organizing of colonial unity, a sense of national identity, and the strong craving
for independence can be seen all throughout history. Similar to the Stamp Act Congress, the South

Analysis Of Chasing Cpt And Leading The Sioc Testing At Cha1
Project Summary
I worked on many small projects this summer. However they can be summarized as follows: building
tools to improve quality and efficiency in the pack department; analyzing our process of chasing CPT
s and leading the SIOC testing at CHA1. I was able to build 3 tools, a Pack Head Count Macro
(Appendix A B), a Pack Rate Puller Macro (Appendix C D), and a Planning Board for Outbound
Macro (Appendix E F) all of these tools were created to be used on Day and Night Shift. I was able to
analyze the process of chasing CPT s using two methods, a profitability analysis and analyzing the
rates of packers. Finally, I helped start up and run SIOC testing at our site. To show the effectiveness
of the three tools I have created, I will explain how the process worked before the tool I created,
describe how my tool works, and then detail how it changed the process, for each tool. The analysis of
chasing CPT s I will first talk about our current CPT chasing program, then walk through my two
analyses. Then I will discuss how I set up SIOC testing, how I ensured it would continue running
successfully and the plan I have put in place to ensure it continues effectively once I leave. Then I will
talk about the benefits of each project. Finally, I will wrap up with a conclusion and
acknowledgements.

Denying what you feel will not make it go away. It ensures that it never gets resolved, (Denial).
Taking action on difficult situations allows individuals to combat reality and avoid unfavorable
circumstances. However, many people think that avoiding the truth means avoiding the situation,
equivalating that the circumstances are not real. This leads to other, more costly problems. Cormac
McCarthy s The Road is set in a post apocalyptic world where a father and son are journeying in
hopes to escape the destruction around them. Similar to McCarthy s book, Toni Morrison centers on a
young African American girl, Pecola, in The Bluest Eye, who hopes to escape the ill perceptions of

Passing by Nella Larsen is a story told in the perspective of Irene Redfield, a fair skinned African
American woman, who worries that her husband s restlessness in their marriage is due to a possible
affair with her friend Clare. As Irene gets ready for an event she thinks to herself: With this self
assurance that she had no real knowledge, she redoubled her efforts to drive out of her mind the
distressing thought of faiths broken and trusts betrayed which every mental vision of Clare, of Brian,
brought with them. She could not, she would not, go again through the tearing agony that lay just
behind her, (Larsen, ch. 3.2). Having no real knowledge if her husband s affair is true helps her to put
the thought in the back of her mind, however the reader finds that the affair is not real. This
imagination of Brian and Clare shows that Irene is mentally unstable, she does not like what she
imagines when she thinks of Clare, of Brian, the two together, yet it is better to handle then the agony
she faces at the thought of Brian s sexuality. The matter of his sexuality is something she refuses to
think about which is why she forms the theory of his infidelity to protect herself from the truth, yet it
only drives her deeper into insanity. However, Irene is not the only one who is brought to insanity by
the denial she creates. Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye, tells of a young girl, Pecola who is African

Essay on Youth Culture
Essay on Youth Culture
The 60 s and 70 s saw the rise of youth culture. Youth culture can be seen as a particular pattern of
beliefs, values, symbols and activities that a group of young people are seen to share.
Along with the rise of youth culture came the theories developed on it. The theories developed in the
60 s were mainly functionalism. Functionalists believe that society or a social structure is like a
biological structure and that all social institutions function for the survival of society. As social
structures change by becoming more complex, social institutions change by becoming more
specialised. Functionalists, therefore, believe youth culture has a social function; they see it as young

Functionalists like Eisenstadt explain social institutions in terms of social problems and cultural
solutions. The youth problem lies in young peoples marginal status, youth culture eases the resulting
anxieties and uncertainties. His argument is that in meeting young peoples needs, youth culture has the
general function of smoothing the transition from child to adult. He believes that the most important
function for its members was emotional and providing young people with a set of relationships, (peer
groups.) The most important point for Eisenstadt is not that some young people become deviants but
that even the most deviant of youths become normal adults. He saw youth culture not as a political
rebellion but as an essential problem solving social function.
Eisenstadts argument is a general argument. It refers to the transition that faces all young people in
industrial society but not all young people are the same. He didn t take into account that growing up
middle class is different to growing up working class and that growing up male is different to growing
up female. Also, he was explaining youth culture in a time of relative affluence and optimism,
growing up was not particularly problematic in the 1950 s.
In the 1970 s the strongly Marxist influenced CCCS related class to youth subcultures. They argued
that youth styles were a reflection of the economic system and its related class relations. They claimed

Retention Essay
Retention is one of the key prerequisites for or outcomes of learning that can either be reinforced
positively as well as negatively or otherwise optimized with respect to how the study time is to be
distributed across sessions. Intuitively, it would appear plausible that, increasing the uninterrupted
study duration would map into superior retention and learning outcomes. The present paper critically
addresses some empirical findings that could question the unaided intuition along these lines while

Glaucon s View Of Justice
Justice is a concept that has been debated for thousands of years, from the Greeks to modern western
society. Most people strive for justice, yet most would disagree with the answer of what is justice and
how do we achieve it. Not only do proponents of justice need to offer clarification, they must also find
the most foundational question in ethics, is it good in itself or is it a means for other things only.
Glaucon argues that justice is not intrinsic, rather we only care about justice because it leads to a better
life, in order to prolong the debate with Socrates; Socrates would tell you that justice is virtuous as an
end not as a means. This is the dilemma brought up in The Republic: Book II, in which Glaucon truly

Without justice the city crumbles is unhealthy, and that is how he declares justice being paramount to
Glaucon and the other friends. Virtue to Socrates is the only way to achieve eudaimonia, Greek for
happiness, good fortune, flourishing, and more. And I can concur with that, what I have a problem
with is his system of government, his way of achieving justice on a city scale, and thus you as an
individual should strive for it. It does not disprove justice, rather we should look to improve the
argument, much like other religious philosophers have tried to improve Ansam s ontological
argument. Socrates assumes that people know and naturally do what they should do for the rest of
their lives. People almost never know what they actually want to do, as we see college students switch
their majors around a lot, thus breaking the social rules of Socrates s ideal city, crumbling the
sociometric classes. Enough people will not be happy with such rules, creating an uproar big enough
to destroy the city s system. Destroying the city s system would by definition destroy the city, which
means that it will not be a just city, nor a city at all. Disproving the argument for justice, but not

Gender Stratification in the Workplace

Biased Professions Ruth Simpson interviewed 40 males working in the female dominated professions
of primary school teachers, flight attendants, nursing, and librarians to better understand their
experiences. Of those interviewed, only two found their career choice unsatisfactory and had plans to

the experiences of male flight attendants, nurses, librarians, and primary school teachers with the
theory that minority workers are generally penalized by increased performance expectations, isolation,
and limited opportunities for promotion (352). Researchers have shown that women in a male
dominated workplace suffer from what has been called token status. A token female employee s high
visibility often increases the pressure to perform at levels above their male peers, their isolation as
male employees exaggerate the differences between men and women, and stereotyping which tends to
limit opportunities for advancement. By contrast, men seem to benefit on several levels by choosing a
career in a female dominated workplace (Simpson 356 364). Simpson found four main effects that
were experienced by her interviewees and these were: (1) career effect, (2) assumed authority effect,
(3), special consideration effect, and (4) zone of comfort effect. The career effect experience was

The Causes And Consequences Of The Media
Catalonia was an interesting news story to cover, particularly because of its European implications.
The Guardian newspaper, Sky News channel and Aljazeera.com are three distinct platforms I selected
to monitor. This is mainly because of their reputation and political dissimilarities. These UK based
media platforms were expected, in such a case of Catalonia, to report this story in depth. My analysis
of the coverage will follow the chronological order of these platforms, which is the same historical
appearance of newspapers, television and Internet. This may also facilitate how we understand the
strengths and weaknesses of each medium in covering this Spanish crisis. The Guardian is centre left
and favoured among Labour Party ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even the space for his speech was very short (4th October). On the other hand, the Guardian included
a picture of a pro Spain rally in Barcelona and quoted from Spanish leaders. Bias, if it was so, can be
also seen in attributing ordinary Catalan people, which were divided over independence. Even when
the correspondents quoted what a pro Spain thinks in page 4 (2nd October), it was a woman that
changed her position to support the independence because she was pulled out by the police. Sky News
, which is described as a pro conservative according to the media blog (2010), treated the event quite
differently. For instance, the report in Sky News at 10 (2nd October) included a sound bite of a pro
Spain Catalan to balance the news story. This may reflect impartiality in this outlet coverage, but it is
not easy to say so. In this report and others, the correspondents insisted on the division of Catalans,
which The Guardian ignored in the background. The report reminded the viewers that although the
Catalan authorities declared that 90% of voters supported the independence, only 40% voted in that
referendum. This statement of an interesting fact can communicate the story clearly to the audience.
The focus of reports was on protests and police violence; however, the Correspondent s report from
Barcelona in Sky News at 11 (3rd October) included a sound bite of the Spanish king speech.

During The Last Clinical Rotation Of My Adult-Gerontology
During the last clinical rotation of my adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner graduate
program, I worked closely with an orthopedic surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital. He
frequently became exasperated when residents would present new consults and focus solely on
imaging. He wanted to know what the history and physical examination revealed. One morning on
rounds, he grabbed my hands and exclaimed, Always look at your patient! Touch them! I hear him in
the back of my head now when I walk into a patient s room. This sentiment validates my experiences
in the surgical intensive care unit as a registered nurse. Nurses often say I just have a sense a patient

The DNP preparation will allow me to grow as a leader though the fellowship experience. I have seen
the benefits of the physician fellowship model in my current practice, having watched as they grow
into confident clinical leaders. I hope to emulate their growth as a learner, teacher, and leader in
nursing through my own fellowship experience. Just as I have done as a student and nurse, I hope to
participate and lead initiatives such as ground rounds, journal club, quality improvement projects, and
evidence based practice change.
Evidence based practice is classically defined as the integration of best research evidence with clinical
expertise to facilitate clinical decision making. I believe the phrase, This is how we have always done
it has no place in patient care. Previously our best practices were based on evidence from incomplete
or inconclusive research. Healthcare delivery in the critical care setting requires thoughtfulness and
deliberate action. I learned this lesson during rounds as the AG AGNP of the mixed medical/surgical
ICU at Massachusetts General Hospital. While quickly reviewing the patient s systems I mentioned
the MAP goal of 65. The attending politely interrupted and asked why? My mind raced for an answer
and I began to explain our goals for perfusion. While he assured me I was not incorrect, he helped
provide insight on the risk of arbitrary values. I later developed a more thoughtful perfusion goal
tailored to the individual patient.

Patriarchy In The House On Mango Street
The dedication of Sandra Cisneros The House on Mango Street is written simply as this: A las Mujeres
/ To the Women. . Cisneros is an award winning American writer born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.
Cisneros has written many books and stories, one of them being The House on Mango Street, which
tells the story, through vignettes, of a young girl named Esperanza. Esperanza faces many challenges
because of her gender and observes and narrates women who are also faced with conflicts due to their
being a woman. With the use of symbolism, irony, and personification in Cisneros The House on
Mango Street, Cisneros distinguishes a key theme of a patriarchal system within society, which
Cisneros believes is a sad and discouraging social system.

King Creon In Sophocles Antigone
While reading the Greek play Antigone , written by the playwright Sophocles, one sees that a few of
the characters can be related back to the reader/watcher of the play. For instance, many people can
identify with the protagonist Antigone through her incomparable dedication in following the laws of
beings of greater power. Others might identify with the wise Tiresias, whose wisdom and advice is
given and taught across the land. However, for a fifteen year old boy such as I, I identify the most with
the antagonist of the play, King Creon. The way that Creon manages his problems, very reminiscent to
the way that many deal with the situations that they face in their lives; how he lets his anger and pride
completely fuel every action that he takes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To be able to speak confidently and know what you are talking about is one of the most important
abilities that one needs to convince others to join their cause. Just as King Creon did in his reign over
Thebes, I am able to use my words to the fullest. To cite the play that we had read in class, Creon says:
Polyneices, who broke his exile to come back with fire and sword against his native city and the
shrines of his father s gods, whose one idea was to spill the blood of his blood and sell his own people
into slavery (1, 34 37). When one reads Antigone without first reading the plays Oedipus and Oedipus
at Colonus, what Creon says isn t all that strange. Even so, if one has looked through the first two
plays, one realizes that Creon has used his words to completely change the way that Polyneices is
viewed by the townsfolk. Creon was able to use his words to persuade others into believing that one of
the sons of their old king was attacking Thebes to deface their gods and sell all of them into slavery. In
this sense of character, Creon and I are homogenous beings. Identical to Creon, I can wrap people
around my fingers via my words; a blessed few are able to completely resist my

Returning Ex-Convicts Exiled Into Our Society. Imagine
Returning Ex Convicts exiled into our Society Imagine having a next door neighbor is an ex convict;
which is defined as a former inmate in prison (ex con). According to Bonita Veysey, the editor of How
Offenders Transform their lives This year, over 600,000 people will be released from prison, and many
millions will be returning to their communities from shorter stints in jails (2). With this statement,
would you feel comfortable continuing to live in your neighborhood? Or immediately pack up your
family and move else where. Ex convicts have many challenges when released from prison which
include: how society views them, finding employment, and how to overcome their past.
Suppose ones decided to pack up and leave your neighbor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the same character was black had tattoos on his face and sagging pants, the audience more be much
more inclined to see that person get caught and go to prison. These well organized white collar
criminals receive praise for being intelligent and manipulating the law. These aesthetically pleasing
criminals get a pat on the back and are seen as someone who made a mistake and needs a second
chance. Race plays a role on which side the convict is labeled as. When one is black they tend to be
more associated with the gangs and street violence vs. the white men who are more likely to commit
corporation criminals. Environment also plays a role in the race of the criminals and also the act of the
criminal. African American men tend to grow up on the street ; so then they get in truble doing
activities that relate to the street. White men tend to usually have a job are a company which then they
take advance of the corporation. Overall most Americans would agree that ex convicts do not have a
positive outlook and you are not expected to accept them back into everyday life.
When criminals are finally released from the government s cage, they have to step back into the lion s

relief mixed with fear (Rodriquez). In an interview with Jeffrey

Bipolar Cell Photoreceptors
Abstract Bipolar cells serve as a direct pathway linking the ganglion cells and the photoreceptors.
There are many different types of bipolar cells, the most common being rod and cone, but all of the
cells are either ON or OFF types. The cells can be distinguished by glutamate receptor expression,
response to light and in their structural layout. Bipolar cells responds to light when initiated by the
synapses of photoreceptors. The neurotransmitter released by these photoreceptors is glutamate. The
bipolar cells respond in two different ways to this stimulus, ON which is glutamate hyperpolarization
and OFF which is glutamate depolarization. Retinal bipolar cells have voltage gated channels that lie
within their membranes and take part in the voltage responses. The most common types of ions that
pass through these channels are calcium and potassium. The three primary types of receptors are
kainate, AMPA and NMDA. The AMPA receptors select for transient components of the light signal
while the kainate receptors conduct sustained characteristics of the signal. This paper will review what
role bipolar cells play in the transduction pathway of a light stimulus to the retina and the ... Show

The axon terminal of rod bipolar cells are located next to ganglion cells but they do not touch. In the
retina of mammals an amacrine cell called AII is the first intermediate in the transduction pathway of
rod signals to ganglion cells (3). The AII cells conduct the signal by stimulating the cone bipolar cell
process that takes place in the inner plexiform layer. This stimulation is achieved by either a chemical
synapse with OFF cells or through the use of gap junctions that are located between AII dendrites and
ON cone axons. The second intermediate in the transduction pathway to conduct signals from the rods
to the ganglion cells are the cone axon

Humility In The Early Christian Community
One major issue that the early Christian community is the idea of humility. They had a major problem
with just putting trust in the Lord and listening what the Bible says. My brothers, do let us have a little
humility; let us forget our self assertion and braggadocio and stupid quarreling, and do what he Bible
tells us instead. (p 28). This passage from The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians, shows that
it is extremely important to just listen to the Bible and stop trying to figure out and do everything
ourselves. This is impossible and I believe that is what Clement was trying to tell the Corinthians.
Another issue that the early Christian community had was straying from the Church Manual that was
talked about in The Didache.

Genetically Modified Organisms And The Environment
While America is excited about genetically modified organisms and think that they are god sent other
countries are weary of them and think that they are dangerous. While many other countries label
genetically modified organisms because they think that people should have a choice whether or not
they want to consume them America believes that their people should not have to know therefore
taking the people s choice away and making the decision for them. There have been studies that have
shown that genetically modified organisms have opened doors to new possibilities, but at the same
time have become a danger to humans and the environment. Although some may think that genetic
engineering is progress for humanity others think America should not produce and sell genetically
modified organisms because it is unsafe for human consumption, and it is harmful to the environment.
Genetically modified organisms are living organisms that have been artificially manipulated in a
laboratory through genetic engineering. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of
plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding
methods. Genetic engineering works because all genes have the same basic structure and work in the
same way. Thus, they are in a sense interchangeable (Yount). Genetically modified organisms are
uncontrollable, and dangerous to humans and the environment and humans should not be eating
anything that has been

Social Commentary On The Movie Apocalypse Now
Apocalypse Now
I have always enjoyed movies. But at some point I started to think of movies as more than just
entertainment. I began to view them as a movie critic would, rather than just a casual viewer. Because
of this perspective, I think of Apocalypse Now as one of the best American made movies I have ever
seen. As a student of and an active participant in the late twentieth century media age, I feel justified
in making this statement. In my lifetime of observation of American media, including fourteen months
of intense movie watching in conjunction with my employment at a local video store, I have had an
opportunity to observe a broad sampling of the films, and feel more than qualified to make this
statement. By referring to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Apocalypse Now is the story of a Green Beret named Willard who journeys through Vietnam by river
to confront an officer who left the army in the pursuit of his own private war. Willard s journey is not
just a trip down a river, it is a metaphorical journey, and creates the effect of multiple levels of
meaning. In addition to a superbly constructed story, Apocalypse Now can be viewed as a social
commentary, an exploration of human conscience, or a moral metaphor. I truly enjoy dissecting and
analyzing movies, as well as literate, at this level. I try to understand what the author, or film maker is
really trying to say.
Looking at the movie from one angle, it can be considered a social commentary of the war in Viet
Nam. By including such characters as Lance B. Johnson, who clearly represents President Lyndon B.
Johnson, we see him lose his personality and conscientiousness to the war, eventually having to be
dragged out of the fire by the soldier, Willard. This is also demonstrated by the scene where Coppula,
himself, appears as a war commentator attempting to direct the actions of the soldier fighting before
him. When looking at the movie from this angle Apocalypse Now is similar to a style which I
associate with Oliver Stone s latter movies, JFK and Natural Born Killers.
I also see the movie as a journey between the polar opposites

  • 2. Coach Carter by Jasmine Jones As a student enters the gym doors of Smith Cotton they can see various trophies from our athletic teams, along with our JROTC National Championship banners that hang up from the walls. One can see by the quality of our gym that our sports are a main part of our school, but as one wonders on into the hallways of our school, they can see how dull they are. By the plainness of the walls, there seems to be no life, in the JROTC hallway you see the trophy cabinet full of multiple national trophies and as you venture on you get to see images of what these teams do, along with the bulletin board that shows newspaper articles of the success of the program. But as you continue to walk toward the other side of the classroom, one can only see some bulletin boards that do not have many things on them except for some advertising. Just by observing this, a new student can see that our school has a great deal to do with sports, but what they cannot see is how well this school performs academically. As we walk down the halls you rarely see a student s work displayed. So one can assume what James Coleman thinks to be correct, that altogether, the trophy case would suggest to the innocent visitor that he was entering an athletic club, not an educational institution. This is a dilemma among many schools that is sometime not dealt with adequately. • 3. Essay The Rites of Spring by Modris Eksteins Modris Eksteins presented a tour de force interpretation of the political, social and cultural climate of the early twentieth century. His sources were not merely the more traditional sources of the historian: political, military and economic accounts; rather, he drew from the rich, heady brew of art, music, dance, literature and philosophy as well. Eksteins examined ways in which life influenced, imitated, and even became art. Eksteins argues that life and art, as well as death, became so intermeshed as to be indistinguishable from one another. The title of the book, The Rites of Spring, and the plunge into the world of the Ballet Russe in the first chapter, made clear that Eksteins intended to use Stravinsky s ballet as an image for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Germany was, relatively speaking, a new nation; new as a single nation. Russian contributions to music and dance were new; they did not date back centuries like in England, France, Germany and Italy. Politically, Germany found herself in a similar situation. She was new and wanted to make her place among the great powers; she saw herself as the innovator, a progressive spirit, as opposed to wearied France and conservative Britain. Eksteins contends that because Germans saw themselves as the agent of (inevitable) progress, they felt their role in The Great War was defensive rather than aggressive. To attack Germany was to attack the future. This belief that they must defend their homeland from those who would deny the future, sustained the Germans during and after the war, and into the next one. Eksteins realized that Hitler was not an anomaly; Hitler touched a sympathetic chord within the Germans. Although Eksteins discussed that any group may want to find scapegoats when things go wrong, citing the tendencies of the French to look beyond themselves for explanations of failure, he implies that, in Germany, finding scapegoats produced such horrific results because preexisting sentiments of anti Semitism combined with the violence and power of Nazism. Syrian rebels against President Bashar al Assad s regime abruptly emerged due to the discontent of the dictatorship and demand for democracy, and the government forces has been tried to suppress the furious rebel in order to maintain Assad s dictatorial regime. Because of the collision between two antagonists that seem to never agree each other, people in Syrian are suffering from the devastating and nonselective bombing. Approximately, 250,000 people have died from the conflict, and over 4.5 million Syrians have migrated to different neighboring countries in Middle East and Europe (BBC News 2016). The civil war has been gone for years and years; however, the devastating war and inhumane government attack on people do not seem to be terminated. Because of the enlarging scale of the civil war, the global society considered the severity as one of the international affairs, and the United Nations eventually came up with a plan for resolution. Despite the effort of the United Nations on a draft resolution for Syrian war crisis, passing the draft resolution through was not easy, and it has not been passed yet. There were some countries who did not agree to pass the draft resolution for Syrian civil war; the main countries who used veto power were Russia and China, the permanent member of the UN. In Edgar Allan Poe s The Tell Tale Heart , The Pit and the Pendulum , and The Masque of Red Death , all of the main characters experience fear. • 6. The Life Of A Woman, By Jamaica Kincaid Lucy, the eponymous character of Jamaica Kincaid s second novel, moves from Antigua to New York not in an arbitrary move, but in a calculated effort to explore her latent queer sexuality and gradually escape the gendered labor of her homeland. By working as an au pair for an upper class white woman named Mariah, Lucy trades birthing labor for domestic labor in a move that initially seems lateral, but serves as a potential gateway to freedom from caretaking that would have been inaccessible in Antigua. Unbridled from her mother, the American Lucy has opportunities to explore her sexuality without being deemed promiscuous, and has the ability to live with a woman she can have intimate relations with. Lucy has continuously disobeyed the performative prescriptions of heteronormativity in her life, but, as explained by the work of Rosamund King, her transgressions in Antigua are rendered invisible by a culture that believes women are incapable of sexual agency. America acknowledges Lucy s transgressions against heteronormativity, which lets her explore sexuality and gradually escape the obligations of gendered work. Lucy is escaping the obligations delineated by female performance. Lucy does not begin to experiment or play with queerness and gender in America, but remains unassimilated to beauty standards with the same intensity she had in Antigua. During her upbringing, her gender nonconforming behaviors and ideology went ignored in Antigua because of the common misconception that females are incapable of having sexual agency, intelligence, or usefulness beyond sustenence work and caretaking within the household (King). Lucy is allowed to kiss girls, like her best friend from school, and her does not fret over failing to enjoy acts of intimacy with males. Heteronormativity is not enforced by expectations of female and male pairings, but instead by the gendered division of labor. According to Nancy Hartsock s Feminist Standpoint, this tradition of forcing females into sustenance work should create a collective caregiver essence to women, and Lucy proves the antithesis. • 10. Edward Taylor And Anne Bradstreet Throughout this class we have read different types of literature from many different authors. Some of the material I truly enjoyed and some of it not so much. I really enjoyed the Native American literature that we started out with in the beginning of the semester. I think the Native Americans are beautiful people who appreciated the land more than most. The Native Americans were smart people who used short stories such as The Chief s Daughters and Coyote and Bear to warn their readers of dangers or teach them moral lessons. I also enjoyed authors such as Edward Taylor, Anne Bradstreet, and Thomas Paine. I did not like reading William Byrd s material, chiefly because he was rude and spoke nastily of the Native Americans. It personally offended me that he thought their belief of afterlife to be gross and sensual . I have read material from many different authors and although I enjoyed most of them, I have to say that my two favorites were Edward Taylor and Anne Bradstreet. Both of these authors are Puritans, and it is easy to tell when reading their pieces. Puritans typically write in simple language, and always refer to God. Edward Taylor created a powerful analogy in his piece, Upon a Spider Catching a Fly. The analogy that he describes is an analogy between people and Satan. The spider represents the devil, who is manipulative and wants to trap people in his web of sin. The wasp represents someone who is strong in their faith and does not let themselves get trapped in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Millam (2008) explains that there is an underlying order in nature demonstrated by the patterns and regularities of God s creations. These regularities can be seen in the forces of nature and are stable throughout space and time (Millam, 2008). The original classification of species, use of precise measurement, and even the first account of scientific research, are all included in the Old Testament of the Holy Scriptures. Many psychologists have argued that such a concept is impossible to measure because it can not be directly observed. Though they are right about this, it is not impossible to measure how quickly mental rotations of images are processed in our brains. Subjects in this experiment were presented two shapes simultaneously, via computer screen, and asked to make judgement, as quickly as possible, as to whether the two shapes presented were the same or mirror images. Two different shapes were used in this experiment, each given as often as the other. During each trial one shape remained stationary and the other was rotated with varying ... In conducting this experiment 20 right handed subjects were used, 10 male and 10 female. Subjects participated in this study either to earn course credit, or for payment of ten dollars per hour. Three things were concluded from this experiment. First, picture rotations took longer to perform than letter rotations. Second, there were no sex differences in reaction times for either stimulus presented, and third, there was a linear increase in reaction times as angular disparity of both stimuli sets increased (Desrocher, smith Taylor, 1995). As predicted this study did replicate some previous findings. However, based on the data from this experiment sex differences did not yield a significant difference in reaction times when presented with the different stimuli. Concurrent with our data, both of the previously mentioned experiments concluded the same thing; reaction times increased as angular disparity increased. Although the objectives in each experiment were somewhat different, there has been a sufficient amount of evidence to support the hypothesis, that reaction times will increase as the angular disparity of objects increase. Initially, this begins with nurses knowing both appropriate and inappropriate situations in which a catheter should be utilized. A successful leader (in the metaphor, the coxswain), however, inspires the rowers to stroke in sync in support of a common direction, which will cause the boat to go farther and faster toward the desired destination. 2. • 25. The DSM-5 Diagnostic Analysis While the DSM 5 remains largely based on categorical nosology, the introduction acknowledges the need for a more dimensional approach (APA, 2013). In fact, the DSM 5 task force and work groups were instructed to consider empirically based guidelines to improve dimensional aspects of disorder categorization such as: shared neural substrates, biomarkers, family traits, course of illness, high comorbidity, genetic risk factors, and shared treatment response. While the DSM 5 task force ultimately decided that it was scientifically premature to transition to a completely dimensional diagnostic system that would have in effect changed the requirements for most disorders, the current edition serves as a transitional guideline to new diagnostic approaches without dramatically disrupting current clinical practice/research (APA, 2013). Dimensional approaches can be observed throughout the DSM 5 through the consolidation of related disorders, Section III additions, and supplemental online materials. Consolidation of Disorders. Similar to the Stamp Act Congress, the South organized and shared its ideas and values to prompt its seceding from the United States. The Civil Rights Movement channels the colonists desire for independence, and demonstrated how justice can bring so many people together. 5. However they can be summarized as follows: building tools to improve quality and efficiency in the pack department; analyzing our process of chasing CPT s and leading the SIOC testing at CHA1. I was able to build 3 tools, a Pack Head Count Macro (Appendix A B), a Pack Rate Puller Macro (Appendix C D), and a Planning Board for Outbound Macro (Appendix E F) all of these tools were created to be used on Day and Night Shift. I was able to analyze the process of chasing CPT s using two methods, a profitability analysis and analyzing the rates of packers. Finally, I helped start up and run SIOC testing at our site. To show the effectiveness of the three tools I have created, I will explain how the process worked before the tool I created, describe how my tool works, and then detail how it changed the process, for each tool. The analysis of chasing CPT s I will first talk about our current CPT chasing program, then walk through my two analyses. Then I will discuss how I set up SIOC testing, how I ensured it would continue running successfully and the plan I have put in place to ensure it continues effectively once I leave. Then I will talk about the benefits of each project. Finally, I will wrap up with a conclusion and acknowledgements. Taking action on difficult situations allows individuals to combat reality and avoid unfavorable circumstances. However, many people think that avoiding the truth means avoiding the situation, equivalating that the circumstances are not real. This leads to other, more costly problems. Cormac McCarthy s The Road is set in a post apocalyptic world where a father and son are journeying in hopes to escape the destruction around them. Youth culture can be seen as a particular pattern of beliefs, values, symbols and activities that a group of young people are seen to share. Along with the rise of youth culture came the theories developed on it. The theories developed in the 60 s were mainly functionalism. Functionalists believe that society or a social structure is like a biological structure and that all social institutions function for the survival of society. Functionalists like Eisenstadt explain social institutions in terms of social problems and cultural solutions. The youth problem lies in young peoples marginal status, youth culture eases the resulting anxieties and uncertainties. His argument is that in meeting young peoples needs, youth culture has the general function of smoothing the transition from child to adult. He believes that the most important function for its members was emotional and providing young people with a set of relationships, (peer groups.) The most important point for Eisenstadt is not that some young people become deviants but that even the most deviant of youths become normal adults. He saw youth culture not as a political rebellion but as an essential problem solving social function. Eisenstadts argument is a general argument. It refers to the transition that faces all young people in industrial society but not all young people are the same. He didn t take into account that growing up middle class is different to growing up working class and that growing up male is different to growing up female. Also, he was explaining youth culture in a time of relative affluence and optimism, growing up was not particularly problematic in the 1950 s. The present paper critically addresses some empirical findings that could question the unaided intuition along these lines while shedding light on the interaction channels or trade offs to be defined across a set of additional explanatory variables. Most people strive for justice, yet most would disagree with the answer of what is justice and how do we achieve it. Not only do proponents of justice need to offer clarification, they must also find the most foundational question in ethics, is it good in itself or is it a means for other things only. Glaucon argues that justice is not intrinsic, rather we only care about justice because it leads to a better life, in order to prolong the debate with Socrates; Socrates would tell you that justice is virtuous as an end not as a means. And I can concur with that, what I have a problem with is his system of government, his way of achieving justice on a city scale, and thus you as an individual should strive for it. It does not disprove justice, rather we should look to improve the argument, much like other religious philosophers have tried to improve Ansam s ontological argument. Socrates assumes that people know and naturally do what they should do for the rest of their lives. People almost never know what they actually want to do, as we see college students switch their majors around a lot, thus breaking the social rules of Socrates s ideal city, crumbling the sociometric classes. Enough people will not be happy with such rules, creating an uproar big enough to destroy the city s system. Destroying the city s system would by definition destroy the city, which means that it will not be a just city, nor a city at all. Gender Stratification in the Workplace Student s Name Professor s Name Course Title April 12, 2013 The Experience of Gender in Gender Biased Professions Ruth Simpson interviewed 40 males working in the female dominated professions of primary school teachers, flight attendants, nursing, and librarians to better understand their experiences. Of those interviewed, only two found their career choice unsatisfactory and had plans to leave (356). The rest were glad they chose or stumbled upon their current career. Simpson contrasted the experiences of male flight attendants, nurses, librarians, and primary school teachers with the theory that minority workers are generally penalized by increased performance expectations, isolation, and limited opportunities for promotion (352). Researchers have shown that women in a male dominated workplace suffer from what has been called token status. A token female employee s high visibility often increases the pressure to perform at levels above their male peers, their isolation as male employees exaggerate the differences between men and women, and stereotyping which tends to limit opportunities for advancement. By contrast, men seem to benefit on several levels by choosing a career in a female dominated workplace (Simpson 356 364). To cite the play that we had read in class, Creon says: Polyneices, who broke his exile to come back with fire and sword against his native city and the shrines of his father s gods, whose one idea was to spill the blood of his blood and sell his own people into slavery (1, 34 37). When one reads Antigone without first reading the plays Oedipus and Oedipus at Colonus, what Creon says isn t all that strange. Even so, if one has looked through the first two plays, one realizes that Creon has used his words to completely change the way that Polyneices is viewed by the townsfolk. Creon was able to use his words to persuade others into believing that one of the sons of their old king was attacking Thebes to deface their gods and sell all of them into slavery. In this sense of character, Creon and I are homogenous beings. Identical to Creon, I can wrap people around my fingers via my words; a blessed few are able to completely resist my ... • 45. Returning Ex-Convicts Exiled Into Our Society. Imagine Returning Ex Convicts exiled into our Society Imagine having a next door neighbor is an ex convict; which is defined as a former inmate in prison (ex con). According to Bonita Veysey, the editor of How Offenders Transform their lives This year, over 600,000 people will be released from prison, and many millions will be returning to their communities from shorter stints in jails (2). With this statement, would you feel comfortable continuing to live in your neighborhood? Or immediately pack up your family and move else where. Ex convicts have many challenges when released from prison which include: how society views them, finding employment, and how to overcome their past. Suppose ones decided to pack up and leave your neighbor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the same character was black had tattoos on his face and sagging pants, the audience more be much more inclined to see that person get caught and go to prison. These well organized white collar criminals receive praise for being intelligent and manipulating the law. These aesthetically pleasing criminals get a pat on the back and are seen as someone who made a mistake and needs a second chance. Race plays a role on which side the convict is labeled as. When one is black they tend to be more associated with the gangs and street violence vs. the white men who are more likely to commit corporation criminals. Environment also plays a role in the race of the criminals and also the act of the criminal. African American men tend to grow up on the street ; so then they get in truble doing activities that relate to the street. White men tend to usually have a job are a company which then they take advance of the corporation. Overall most Americans would agree that ex convicts do not have a positive outlook and you are not expected to accept them back into everyday life. When criminals are finally released from the government s cage, they have to step back into the lion s den of this cruel world. The gates were finally open, as I stepped back on solid ground I felt a sense of relief mixed with fear (Rodriquez). In an interview with Jeffrey ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Bipolar Cell Photoreceptors Abstract Bipolar cells serve as a direct pathway linking the ganglion cells and the photoreceptors. There are many different types of bipolar cells, the most common being rod and cone, but all of the cells are either ON or OFF types. The cells can be distinguished by glutamate receptor expression, response to light and in their structural layout. Bipolar cells responds to light when initiated by the synapses of photoreceptors. The neurotransmitter released by these photoreceptors is glutamate. The bipolar cells respond in two different ways to this stimulus, ON which is glutamate hyperpolarization and OFF which is glutamate depolarization. Retinal bipolar cells have voltage gated channels that lie within their membranes and take part in the voltage responses. The most common types of ions that pass through these channels are calcium and potassium. The three primary types of receptors are kainate, AMPA and NMDA. The AMPA receptors select for transient components of the light signal while the kainate receptors conduct sustained characteristics of the signal. This paper will review what role bipolar cells play in the transduction pathway of a light stimulus to the retina and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The axon terminal of rod bipolar cells are located next to ganglion cells but they do not touch. In the retina of mammals an amacrine cell called AII is the first intermediate in the transduction pathway of rod signals to ganglion cells (3). The AII cells conduct the signal by stimulating the cone bipolar cell process that takes place in the inner plexiform layer. This stimulation is achieved by either a chemical synapse with OFF cells or through the use of gap junctions that are located between AII dendrites and ON cone axons. The second intermediate in the transduction pathway to conduct signals from the rods to the ganglion cells are the cone axon ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Humility In The Early Christian Community One major issue that the early Christian community is the idea of humility. They had a major problem with just putting trust in the Lord and listening what the Bible says. My brothers, do let us have a little humility; let us forget our self assertion and braggadocio and stupid quarreling, and do what he Bible tells us instead. (p 28). This passage from The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians, shows that it is extremely important to just listen to the Bible and stop trying to figure out and do everything ourselves. This is impossible and I believe that is what Clement was trying to tell the Corinthians. Another issue that the early Christian community had was straying from the Church Manual that was talked about in The Didache. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Genetically Modified Organisms And The Environment While America is excited about genetically modified organisms and think that they are god sent other countries are weary of them and think that they are dangerous. While many other countries label genetically modified organisms because they think that people should have a choice whether or not they want to consume them America believes that their people should not have to know therefore taking the people s choice away and making the decision for them. There have been studies that have shown that genetically modified organisms have opened doors to new possibilities, but at the same time have become a danger to humans and the environment. Although some may think that genetic engineering is progress for humanity others think America should not produce and sell genetically modified organisms because it is unsafe for human consumption, and it is harmful to the environment. Genetically modified organisms are living organisms that have been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. Genetic engineering works because all genes have the same basic structure and work in the same way. Thus, they are in a sense interchangeable (Yount). Genetically modified organisms are uncontrollable, and dangerous to humans and the environment and humans should not be eating anything that has been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Social Commentary On The Movie Apocalypse Now Apocalypse Now I have always enjoyed movies. But at some point I started to think of movies as more than just entertainment. I began to view them as a movie critic would, rather than just a casual viewer. Because of this perspective, I think of Apocalypse Now as one of the best American made movies I have ever seen. As a student of and an active participant in the late twentieth century media age, I feel justified in making this statement. In my lifetime of observation of American media, including fourteen months of intense movie watching in conjunction with my employment at a local video store, I have had an opportunity to observe a broad sampling of the films, and feel more than qualified to make this statement. By referring to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Apocalypse Now is the story of a Green Beret named Willard who journeys through Vietnam by river to confront an officer who left the army in the pursuit of his own private war. Willard s journey is not just a trip down a river, it is a metaphorical journey, and creates the effect of multiple levels of meaning. In addition to a superbly constructed story, Apocalypse Now can be viewed as a social commentary, an exploration of human conscience, or a moral metaphor. I truly enjoy dissecting and analyzing movies, as well as literate, at this level. I try to understand what the author, or film maker is really trying to say. Looking at the movie from one angle, it can be considered a social commentary of the war in Viet Nam. By including such characters as Lance B. Johnson, who clearly represents President Lyndon B. Johnson, we see him lose his personality and conscientiousness to the war, eventually having to be dragged out of the fire by the soldier, Willard. This is also demonstrated by the scene where Coppula, himself, appears as a war commentator attempting to direct the actions of the soldier fighting before him. When looking at the movie from this angle Apocalypse Now is similar to a style which I associate with Oliver Stone s latter movies, JFK and Natural Born Killers. I also see the movie as a journey between the polar opposites ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
