Margaret Mahler s theory of separation individuation suggests that healthy psychological development
is based on the child s ability to gradually separate his or herself from the mother to form an individual
identity (Flanagan, 2011). There are four phases of development that a child will go through to attain
this individuation: the autistic phase, the symbiotic phase, and separation individuation proper
(Flanagan, 2011). The author can assume that Antonio completed his autistic phase successfully, as he
can successfully distinguish between pleasure and pain (Robbins, Chatterjee, Canda, 2011). In
addition to this, the case vignette states that he was a healthy baby to whom Hilda was very attentive.
Antonio s symbiotic phase, when the child and the mother are at their most complete union, seems to
have progressed without major incident as well; Hilda was attentive to Antonio s needs and would
respond positively to her voice with a head turn and a smile (Flanagan, 2011).
The next phase, separation individuation proper, includes four sub phases: differentiation, practicing,
rapprochement, and on the way to object constancy (Flanagan, 2011). It is within these sub phases that
Antonio is static; because of the abusive reactions of his father, Daniel, Hilda had to intervene during

It is the same in the science world. Let s say that there is a scientific study being conducted about how
consuming a large amount of pop tarts could lead to Cancer. If you are the leader of this study, you
would assume that the results your peers give you are 100% true. Falsifying information/ results for
something as important as this study could lead to horrendous problems. It is very wrong to lie about
information, especially if it puts a person s life at risk. But, there are some cases where lying could
help in a situation, or protect someone.
Lying in some instances, is not always terrible. There are many ways a little white lie is acceptable
every now and then. Your friend asks you if this dress looks cute on her, and you say ooo yes girl it
looks great . But, you think it does not look that tremendous on her. You said that to protect her
feelings. That is one example of how telling a white lie is not that gruesome. People also tell white lies
for joyous occasions too, like a surprise party. Lying can also get an individual out of a situation. For
example, someone you particularly do not like approaches and asks for your phone number. You could
say that you do not have a phone. In that case it wouldn t really harm anyone.

people lie to protect other people, while others lie to benefit themselves like maintaining the perfect
