Recent research studied how zebra stripes may help prevent tsetse fly bites. Researchers placed painted trays of black, white, and black/white striped patterns in a tsetse fly infested area. The results showed the fewest flies landed on the striped pattern. It is believed the stripes disrupt the flies' attraction to horizontal patterns in light, making the zebras less appealing to the flies. The stripes thus provided an evolutionary advantage and may explain how zebras developed their distinctive coat pattern through natural selection.
