TASK 4A
1.WHAT TYPES OF MAGAZINES AND
TARGET AUDIENCES HAS IPC BEEN
ASSOCIATED WITH OVER THE YEARS?
• IPC has published a variety of different magazines over the years such as:
Country Life, Horse & Hound, Cycling weekly to Woman’s Own, Stamp
Magazine and New Musical Express (NME). Their target audience varies and
they have attracted different types of people since beginning in the 1800’s,
however it can be said that they target audiences with specific interest and
hobbies, their market is also specifically in Europe so their target audience
would be European.
• Around the early 1900’s they introduced ‘Woman’s Weekly’, which was the
first of their four traditional women’s weeklies, this would target white ,middle-
class women. They began to look at affordability, which would allow women
to buy the magazine ‘weekly’. This is when they began to try and create a
more effective magazine which would have a constant income.
1.WHAT TYPES OF MAGAZINES AND
TARGET AUDIENCES HAS IPC BEEN
ASSOCIATED WITH OVER THE YEARS?
• In the 1920’s they began to introduce special interest magazine, this would target a variety of different
people based upon interests. Although their audience was still European they began to target
numerous members of different groups in those European societies. By the 1950’s they had began to
draw in a younger target audience, although still male, white predominantly, this came with the arrival
of the New Musical Express in 1952 which was heralded by many music fans- or the people in the
position to enjoy such music.
• In 1955 TV Times was published shortly after the arrival of ITV, this is where technology began to change
and evolve in society, providing the publishing company more material to create magazines about. As
technology evolved so did the magazines, particularly their target audience as TV itself drew in diverse
masses.
• In the 1960’s IPC created an additional genre, sports- this meant that they would appeal to a niche
market of sports fans at the time.
1.WHAT TYPES OF MAGAZINES AND
TARGET AUDIENCES HAS IPC BEEN
ASSOCIATED WITH OVER THE YEARS
• By the 1990’s National Music Express or NME
became one of the most popular music magazine
of all time, branching it’s reaches beyond the
European market, it is also around this time
technology such as Walkman's had been invented
revolutionising the way people listened to music
and how much they could consume of the music
market. More modern forms of music also began to
take grasp such as Alternative rock, indie rock and
other more modern subgenres.
WHY MIGHT IPC BE AN APPROPRIATE
PUBLISHER FOR A NEW MUSIC
MAGAZINE?
• IPC was known for a variety of different
magazines so would be willing to take on a
magazine of the music genre, may even
have a keen interest in attracting multiple
different music sub genres.
• It has been going for a long period of time
so it is a well known brand amongst
publishing and may have a good reputation
