This document discusses a proposal for implementing "handy cards" to pay bus fares in India. The cards would work similarly to debit cards and could be swiped by conductors on a point-of-sale machine to pay fares according to destination. This would eliminate the problem of conductors not returning correct change and passengers losing small amounts of money (paise). It could save hundreds of millions of rupees annually. The system would be similar to cards used in food courts, with cards recharged as needed and fares automatically deducted during trips based on location. Implementing such a system would have high initial costs but would save money and improve the economic situation over time by reducing lost funds.
